A. Bendix/King KN 62A DME Receiver
Figure 1 shows the Bendix/King KN 62A digitally-tuned, solid-state DME receiver. It is located in
the avionics rack in the instrument panel, see Chapter 31.
The avionics bus supplies power to the DME receiver. The ALT/BAT switch (Lycoming version) or
ELECTRIC MASTER key switch (TAE version) and the AVIONIC MASTER switch must be set to
ON to supply power through the DME circuit-breaker to the DME receiver. Refer to Chapter 92 for
the wiring diagrams.
The DME receiver has a gas-discharge display with automatic dimming which shows the following:
) Range, speed, and time-to station when the unit is in RMT or GS/T mode.
) Range and frequency when the unit is in FREQ mode.
) When the KN 62A is in search mode, dashes are displayed instead of range, speed and time-tostation.
The DME receiver has these controls:
) ON-OFF switch. It gives power to the unit.
) RMT-FREQ-GS/T switch. It determines both the information displayed and the channeling
source for the KN 62A.
) In 'remote' (RMT) mode, the KN 62A is remote-channeled by the NAV receiver that is
selected with the remote DME switch (see Paragraph B). The display shows range, speed,
and time-to-station.
) In 'frequency' (FREQ) mode, the KN 62A is channeled from its own frequency selection
knobs. The display shows range and frequency.
) In 'ground speed/time-to-station' (GS/T) mode, the KN 62A holds the last internally selected
frequency. The display shows range, speed, and time-to-station.
) Frequency select knobs. The smaller of the two knobs has an 'in' and an 'out' position. When
in the 'in' position, this smaller knob changes the 0.1 MHz digit (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, etc.). When pulled
'out', it adds 0.05 MHz to the frequency and tunes in 0.1 MHz steps (0.05, 0.15, 0.25, etc.).
Pushing the smaller knob 'in' subtracts 0.05 MHz from the displayed frequency. The outer,
larger knob changes the larger digits (1 MHz, 10 MHz). In FREQ mode, the unit will display
distance and the selected frequency.

B. Remote DME Switch
Figure 2 shows the remote DME switch. It is installed in the left-hand section of the instrument
panel, see Chapter 31.
When the DME receiver is in 'remote' (RMT) mode, it is channeled by that NAV receiver which is
selected with the remote DME switch (NAV 1 or NAV 2).
C. DME Antenna
The Bendix/King KA 60 DME antenna is located on the bottom surface of the fuselage, under the
cockpit on the right side.

Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have with the DME. If you have the trouble detailed in the
Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair given in the Repair
column.
Trouble Possible Cause Repair
DME does not operate. DME circuit-breaker not set.
Faulty DME receiver.
Faulty cables/connectors.
Set the DME circuit-breaker.
Repair or replace the DME
receiver.
Do a test for continuity on each
cable. Do a test for short circuit
to ground and between cables.
Replace defective cables.
DME unable to tune to a DME
station.
Faulty DME receiver.
Faulty DME antenna.
Faulty connection between
DME antenna and DME
receiver.
Repair or replace the DME
receiver.
Do a test for correct
impedance of the antenna. If
necessary, repair or replace
the antenna.
Ensure proper cable
connections. Do a test for
correct impedance of the
antenna co-axial cable. Do a
test for continuity on each
cable. Do a test for short circuit
to ground and between cables.
Replace defective cables.
No audio from DME. Faulty DME receiver.
Faulty audio system.
Repair or replace the DME
receiver.
Trouble-shoot the audio
system. Refer to Section
23-50.
