E. Prepare to Examine the Spark Igniter

(1) Open the right and left fan cowl panel (AMM 71-11-02/201).

WARNING: OBEY THE INSTRUCTIONS IN AMM 78-31-00/201 WHEN YOU OPEN THE
_______ THRUST REVERSERS. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THE INSTRUCTIONS, INJURY TO PERSONS OR DAMAGE TO THE EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
(2) Open the right and left thrust reverser (AMM 78-31-00/201).
F. Procedure

WARNING:_______THE IGNITION SYSTEM VOLTAGE IS DANGEROUSLY HIGH. DO NOT TOUCH THE IGNITION COMPONENTS UNTIL YOU DO THE PROCEDURE THAT FOLLOWS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL RELEASE THE HIGH VOLTAGE FROM THE IGNITION EXCITER. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THIS PROCEDURE, INJURY TO PERSONS CAN OCCUR.
(1)
Do these steps to release the high voltage from the ignition exciter:
(a)
Set the start switch to the OFF position.
(b)
Stop (wait) for a minimum of 2 minutes.
(c)
Disconnect the exciter-to-igniter cable terminal from the igniter plug.
(2)
Prepare to Inspect the Ignition Lead

WARNING:_______ IGNITION VOLTAGE IS DANGEROUSLY HIGH AND MAY BE FATAL, IGNITION
SYSTEM MUST BE INOPERATIVE FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE REMOVAL
OF IGNITION COMPONENTS. AFTER DETACHING LEAD FROM IGNITER,
CURRENT MUST BE DISCHARGED BY MANUALLY GROUNDING TERMINAL.

Clean the ceramic insulator with a lint free cloth.

Clean the contact button (ignition lead end) with a lint free cloth.

WARNING: DO NOT GET METHYL ETHYL KETONE (MEK) IN YOUR MOUTH OR EYES, OR
_______ ON YOUR SKIN. DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES FROM MEK. PUT ON A PROTECTIVE SPLASH GOGGLE AND GLOVES WHEN YOU USE MEK. KEEP MEK AWAY FROM SPARKS, FLAME AND HEAT. MEK IS A POISONOUS AND FLAMMABLE SOLVENT WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURIES TO PERSONS OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.

Clean the ceramic insulator and contact (ignition lead end) with a cotton swab that is moist with: 1, 1, 1 trichloroethane (CP1011), or stoddard solvent (CP2011), or Methyl Ethyl Ketone (CP1040) (AMM 70-10-01/201).

If there is an indication of arcing, replace the spark igniter (AMM 74-21-02/401).

If it is necessary, remove the carbon buildup on the contact buttons with a medium grit abrasive impregnated rubber rod.
(a) Use a rotary motion to polish the contact.
