3. System Test - Flight Recorder System
A. General
(1) The system test provides procedures for testing all parameter inputs to the Flight Recorder System, as well as the Trip and Date Encoder (if installed), and the Flight Recorder Test Module. The test may be performed in any sequence. Each test is independent; however, all related tests should be performed at the same time.
B. Equipment and Materials

Digital Signal Display Unit (portable tester) - Sundstrand P/N 981-6301-002
(2)
Pitot static test set (Ref 34-11-0)

D. Prepare for Test
(1)
Apply electrical power to the airplane (Ref 24-22-0).
NOTE: During the system test the airplane engines should not be running, except as required in the procedure.
(2)
Check that the following circuit breakers are closed:
(a)
FLT REC-AC, FLT REC-DC on P18-2.
(b)
AIR/GND relay and LIGHTS (Landing Gear) on P6-2.
(c)
Master Caution indicators on P6-3.
(d)
Indicator Lights Master Dimming Bus on P6-3.
(e)
DIM AND TEST ON P6-3.
(f)
No. 1 and No. 2 Engine Thrust Reverser on P6.
(g)
Compass System circuit breakers on P18 and P5 circuit breaker panel.
(3)
Connect the portable tester to the front of the recorder.
(4)
Unless otherwise specified, set portable tester switches as follows:

On the trip and date encoder (if installed), set a random six digit number into the encoder prior to the test.

E. Check Flight Recorder Turn-on
(1)
On Flight Recorder Test Module, check that OFF light is on.
(2)
On Flight Recorder Test Module, position the TEST NORMAL switch to TEST. Check that OFF light goes out.
(3)
Position the Flight Recorder TEST NORMAL switch to NORMAL. Check that the Flight Recorder OFF light comes on.
(4)
With Engine No. 1 and Engine No. 2 running separately, check that Flight Recorder OFF light goes out. while each engine is running.
(5)
Engine run is no longer required during test procedure, ensure engines are shut down.
(6)
Open and close AIR/GND relay lights circuit breaker on P6-2 panel. The Flight Recorder OFF light goes out and then comes on.
F. Test Event Marker signals (On airplanes with Trip and Date Encoder)
(1)
Ensure flight recorder TEST NORMAL switch is in TEST position.
(2)
Select subframe 0 word 9 on the portable tester.
(3)
Check Bit 2 light is OFF
(4)
Press the EVENT pushbutton on Trip and Date Encoder panel.
(5)
Check Bit 2 light comes on.
(6)
Release EVENT pushbutton.
(7)
Check Bit 2 light goes out.
(8)
Return flight recorder TEST NORMAL switch to NORMAL.

F. Test Trip and Date Encoder Operation (On airplanes with Trip and Date Encoder)
(1)
Ensure flight recorder TEST NORMAL switch is in TEST position.
(2)
Check that indicator light on Trip and Date Encoder panel is out.
(3)
Press REPEAT button until indicator light comes on and remains on.
(4)
Select subframe 0 word 9 on the portable tester.
(5)
During the encoding cycle the Bit 2 light on the portable tester intermittently comes on.
(6)
After approximately 16 (. 2) minutes the Trip and Date Encoder will stop, the indicator light on the encoder will go out and the Bit 2 light on the portable tester will go out.
(7)
Return flight recorder TEST NORMAL switch to NORMAL.
