In the copy mode, a marker tone is placed on the DFDR tape at its present position. The DFDR tape is then rewound to its beginning. The DFDR tape is then driven forward while all eight tracks are read simultaneously and copied by the copy recorder. At the end of the DFDR tape, the tape is rewound to the original position where the marker tone has been placed.

(7)
Set the flight recorder TEST/NORMAL switch on the P5 overhead panel to the TEST position.
(8)
Make sure the POWER LOSS light flashes. Press the keyboard switch labeled STOP to clear the POWER LOSS indicator.
(9)
Make sure the READY light comes on to indicate that the DFDR is on-line in the standby mode and the copy recorder is set to 6 IPS.
NOTE: Ignore the COPY ABORTED light if it comes on at power-on.
(10)
Load a full reel of tape on the left hub and an empty reel on right (take-up) hub.
(11)
Thread the tape along the tape path and wrap 3 to 5 turns of tape on the take-up reel. Make sure the tape path is maintained.
(12)
Place tension on the tape until both tension arms move to their center position. Set the mechanical counter to zero.
(13)
Rotate the take-up reel CCW to read 0003. Set counter to zero.
(14)
Push the COPY switch once. A tone marker is recorded on the DFDR tape to note its existing position. The DFDR tape will rewind to the beginning-of-tape before the copy process starts. The rewind can continue for 15 minutes.
NOTE: If you push the COPY switch more than once, the system will record more than one tone. The DFDR will not be able to find the original tape position.
(15)
The copy process takes approximately 30 minutes to complete after you push the copy switch. The following indications will show:
(a)
The light sequence will be PRE COPY, COPY, POST COPY and DONE.
(b)
The UFDR NOT AT TONE light goes off about 12 seconds before the DONE light comes on.
(c)
During the entire copy process, the UFDR BITE, COPY REC BIT, POWER LOSS, and COPY ABORTED lights must remain off.
(d)
After the POST COPY light turns on, the copy recorder tape continues in the forward direction until it reaches the end of the tape (about 1 minute).
(e)
When the copy process is completed, only the DONE light will be on.
(16)
Press the STOP switch to enable the manual control switches.
(17)
Push the MAN CNTRLS switch and the REWIND switch at the same time. The copy tape will rewind onto the left reel.
(18)
Set the flight recorder TEST/NORMAL switch on the P5 overhead panel to the NORMAL position.
(19)
Disconnect the copy recorder from the DFDR and replace the cover on the ATE connector.

3. Tape Copy Procedure Using a Fairchild Copy Recorder
A. General
(1) The copy recorder provides a convenient and rapid means to extract recorded flight data without having to remove the DFDR or its tape reel from the airplane. The copy process requires approximately 4 hours and 16 minutes and is accomplished by connecting the copy recorder to the ATE connector on the front panel of the DFDR.
