WEATHER RADAR SYSTEM - ADJUSTMENT/TEST
EFFECTIVITY
Airplanes With Sperry Primus 90 Weather Radar
1. General
A. The weather radar system adjustment/test procedure consists of an operational test (par. 2), a system test (par. 3), and a system shut down procedure (par. 4).
B. The operational test utilize the test mode and other self-test capabilities in the weather radar system to check system performance. When the test mode is selected, the transmitter transmits into the dummy load, and a special test pattern is generated. By utilization of the internally generated test pattern, the system is capable of detecting most faults without additional test equipment.
C. The system test checks the accuracy of antenna position when pitch and roll input signals are applied from the airplane attitude reference system. Radiating tests involving reception of radar echoes from external targets are also checked. The operational test is a portion of the system test, and should be performed first. The system tests are performed as a periodic maintenance function, or may be performed separately as aids to fault isolation.
WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE WEATHER RADAR WHILE AIRPLANE IS BEING REFUELED OR DEFUELED AND DO NOT OPERATE IN ANY RADIATING MODE WHILE A FUELING OPERATION IS BEING CONDUCTED WITHIN 200 FEET OF THE ANTENNA OR AN EXPLOSION MAY OCCUR.
PERSONNEL MUST NOT ENTER AN AREA CLOSER THAN 10 FEET IN FRONT OF A SCANNING RADIATING ANTENNA AND 80 FEET IN FRONT OF A STATIONARY RADIATING ANTENNA OR INJURY TO PERSONNEL MAY OCCUR.
CAUTION: WHEN WEATHER RADAR IS OPERATED IN ANY MODE OTHER THAN STANDBY OR TEST, DIRECT NOSE OF THE AIRPLANE SO FORWARD 180-DEGREE SECTOR IS FREE OF LARGE METALLIC OBJECTS (HANGARS, TRUCKS, OTHER AIRPLANES, ETC.) FOR A DISTANCE OF 300 FEET AND TILT ANTENNA UPWARD 14 DEGREES OR DAMAGE TO RECEIVER MAY OCCUR.
