3.  Horizontal Situation Indicator
A.  The horizontal situation indicator presents a plan view of the navigation situation. The display includes airplane heading with reference to magnetic north; the selected heading, the selected course and the distance to selected VOR/DME stations.
B.  Magnetic heading of the airplane is displayed by the compass card which is read with respect to the lubber line. When on magnetic heading, the card is positioned through the heading servo, and controlled by the heading signal fed from the compass system. This heading signal is also fed to the stators of the heading and course select synchros in the flight director control panel.
C.  The heading cursor, which is ganged to the rotor of the heading select synchro, indicates the selected magnetic heading, and is positioned by the HEADING knob on the flight director control panel. Once set, the heading cursor rotates with the compass card, giving a continuous display of selected heading, and any heading deviation. Heading information is used in computing bank steering commands when the flight director system is in heading or HDG V/L mode.
D.  The central portion of the indicator is the deviation section. It contains the course arrow, course deviation bar, course deviation scale and TO-FROM arrows. The entire section rotates with the compass card as the heading of the airplane changes. The various components of the section perform their individual functions as follows:
(1)  
The course arrow points in the direction of the selected course, and is positioned by the COURSE knob on the flight director mode selector panel.

(2)  
The course deviation bar indicates the deviation from the selected course. With the airplane on course, the course deviation bar is aligned with the course arrow and tail. Either the VOR/ILS or omega navigation unit controls the course deviation bar depending upon the NAV transfer switch position.

(3)  
The to-from pointer appears from behind the course mask pointing to the head of the course arrow to indicate the airplane is flying to a VOR station or omega waypoint. The pointer appears in the opposite direction pointing to the tail of the course arrow to indicate the airplane is flying from a VOR station or omega waypoint. The to-from arrow is out of view behind the course mask when the VOR/ILS navigation system is tuned to an ILS frequency.

E.  The miniature airplane in the center of the indicator simulates the position of the real airplane in flight. It is compared against heading cursor, course arrow and course deviation bar positions, to obtain the pictorial representation of the airplane heading, and any deviation from the desired heading or course.
F.  The VOR/LOC flag functions to indicate navigation unit; VOR or omega malfunction. It appears whenever power is turned off, or lost to the navigation unit, or whenever the course deviation signal fails, or falls below a certain predetermined value. The GS warning flag functions in a similar manner, but with respect to the GS receiver.
G.  The GS pointer displays airplane position relative to the glide slope. It is read against the GS scale to indicate position of the airplane with respect to the glide slope. A deflection up indicates that the airplane is below the glide slope, and a deflection down that it is above the glide slope. The pointer is actuated by the GS deviation signal. The glide slope flag and pointer are biased out of view when the associated NAV transfer switch is in the OMEGA position or when the VOR/ILS navigation system is tuned to a VOR frequency.
H.  Two counters at the top of the HSI indicate the airplane ground speed and miles to go to the selected omega way point (Ref 34-59-0).
I.  A VOR-ILS flag appears in the VOR-ILS/NAV annunciator when the VOR/ILS navigation system is selected by the NAV transfer switch as the source of navigation information. With the NAV transfer switch in OMEGA position, the VOR-ILS flag retracts to reveal a NAV legend.
J.  A navigation system number annunciator displays either the numeral 1 or 2 to indicate whether navigation unit No. 1 or 2 is being used as the navigation data source for the HSI. The HSI system number annunciator displays the numeral 1 when the associated NAV transfer switch is in the OMEGA position.

K.  A heading information annunciator appears behind the lubber line at all times. The HEADING flag will appear anytime the compass system data is invalid. 
L.  The ALERT annunciator, located in the lower left portion of the instrument face, is not used.
