R 1_ Background display (Option)
R (Ref. Fig. 022)
R There are two different background Terrain Awareness display
R mode: standard and Peaks. For both modes the background
R display is computed from the aircraft altitude with respect to
R the terrain data in the digital elevation matrix overlays.
R - Standard mode
R Terrain is displayed using colors and shading patterns
R corresponding to the vertical displacement between the
R terrain elevation and the current aircraft altitude. Red and
R yellow dot patterns indicate terrain near or above the
R current altitude of the aircraft. Solid yellow and red
R colors indicate caution and warning areas with respect to
R the flight path of the aircraft.
R High and low density green display patterns indicate terrain
R that is below the aircraft and within 2000 ft. of the
R aircraft altitude. Terrain more than 2000 ft. below the
R aircraft is not displayed and the terrain display is
R typically blank during the enroute portion of the flight.
R - Peaks mode
R The Peaks display option is available on Airbus aircraft
R equipped with EIS 2 LCD displays. The Peaks terrain display
R adds additional density patterns and level thresholds to the
R standard mode display levels and patterns. These additional
R levels are based on absolute terrain elevations in relation
R to the range and distribution of terrain in the display
R area. The Peaks display is thus a "merged" display
R applicable to all phases of flight. At altitude safely above
R all terrain for the display range chosen, the terrain is
R displayed independent of aircraft altitude emphasizing the
R highest and lowest elevations to provide increased
R situational awareness. This increased awareness can be
R particularly valuable to the flight crew in the event of an
R unplanned descent or off-route deviation and for the purpose
R of previewing terrain prior to descent.
R The Peaks display includes a high green level to indicate
R the highest non-threatening terrain. The standard lower
R density green display patterns indicate mid and upper
R terrain in the display area as well as terrain that is
R within 2000 ft.of the aircraft. The red and yellow dot
R patterns are unchanged and continue to indicate terrain that
R is near or above the current altitude of the aircraft. Solid
