R  The BITE: 
R  - transmits permanently ATC system status and its identification 
R  message to the CFDIU 
R  - memorizes the faults which occurred during the last 63 flight legs 
R  - monitors data inputs from the various peripherals (FMGC, ADIRU, ATC 
R  CTL UNIT and CFDIU) 
R  - transmits to the CFDIU the result of the tests performed and 
R  self-tests 
R  - can communicate with the CFDIU through the menus. 
R  The BITE can operate in two modes: 
R  - the normal mode 
R  - the interactive mode. 
R  (a) Normal mode 
R  During the normal mode the BITE monitors cyclically the status of 
R  the ATC system. It transmits its information to the CFDIU during 
R  the flight concerned. 
R  In case of fault detection, the BITE stores the information in 
R  the fault memories. 
R  These items of information are transmitted to the CFDIU every 100 
R  ms by an ARINC 429 message with label 350. 
R  (b) Interactive mode: 
R  The interactive mode can only be activated on the ground. 
R  This mode enables communication between the CFDIU and the ATC 
R  transponder BITE by means of the MCDU.

R  The ATC interactive mode is composed of:

R  The purpose of this item is to present the fault messages 
R  (class 1 and 2, internal and external) that appeared during the 
R  last flight. 
R  - PREVIOUS LEGS REPORT 
R  The purpose of this item is to present the fault messages 
R  (class 1 and 2, internal and external) that appeared during the 
R  previous flights. 
R  When no fault has been detected during the last 63 flights, the 
R  NO FAULT DETECTED message is displayed. 
R  - LRU IDENTIFICATION 
R  The purpose of this item is to present the part number (P/N) 
R  and the software number (SW/N) of the component. 
R  - GROUND SCANNING 
R  This item is based on the monitoring and fault analysis used 
R  during the flight. 
R  The system peripherals monitoring and system internal cyclic 
R  tests are used to detect transient anomalies. 
R  - TROUBLE SHOOTING DATA 
R  This item allows to analyze the snapshot of the recorded 
R  failure to detect the software bugs. 
R  - CLASS 3 FAULTS 
R  The purpose of this item is to present the class 3 fault 
R  messages that appeared during the last flight. 
R  There is no date and no failure classification. 
R  - GROUND REPORT 
R  The purpose of this item is to present the class 1, 2 or 3 
R  internal failures when they are detected on ground. 
R  - DISCRETE STATUS 
R  This item includes display of all input discretes, display of 
R  instrumentation port data blocks or any other information that 
R  may be helpful in system trouble-shooting or any other 
R  application. 
R  - TEST 
R  The activation of this manual test shall only be allowed on the 
R  ground. The results of the test are transmitted to the CFDS but 
R  are not memorized.
