R (a) Introduction
R The transponder is capable of operating with ATC Radar Beacon
R System interrogators, as well as mode S interrogators and is also
R designed to accept two antenna inputs for diversity operation.
R Diversity operation in a Mode S transponder is an added feature
R to improve air to air surveillance as part of a collision
R avoidance system.
R An additional feature of a Mode S transponder is the ability to
R send and receive data link messages via the reply and
R interrogation mode S message formats.

R The transponder consists of four principal assemblies: the
R transmitter, the receiver, the I/O and processor circuit card and
