5.0 DAMAGE TOLERANCE RATING (DTR) SYSTEM APPLICATION
The following instructions apply to the 737-300/-400/-500 Supplemental Structural Inspection Program. Approval and monitoring of the resulting program is the responsibility of the regulatory agency of each operator.
5.1  General Instructions
5.1.1  The supplemental inspections provided in this document are recommended to be incorporated into the maintenance program of all airplanes prior to reaching the threshold listed in Section 3.0.  An initial inspection of all SSIs shown in Section 11.0 must be done at the threshold and repeat inspections must be done in accordance with the DTR Check Forms.
5.1.2  This supplemental inspection program does not replace or supersede structural inspection programs already established.  The DTR Check Forms in this document are used to determine if an aging airplane needs additional inspection effort to satisfy the damage tolerance requirement for each Structural Significant Item (SSI). The example DTR Check Forms in Section 8 show one method for satisfying the required DTR for the specific SSI.  They are not intended as stand-alone inspection tasks.
5.1.3  Operators of affected airplanes shall complete all applicable DTR Check Forms for each SSI in Section 11.0.  To accomplish this, operators should first relate each current structural inspection maintenance task to one of the inspection method categories in Paragraph 5.1.19 and relate qualified inspections to the applicable DTR Check Form.  In all cases, the final inspection program must provide a total DTR equal to or greater than the required DTR.  The values obtained from the DTR curves should be rounded to the nearest tenth (0.1).
5.1.4  When the existing maintenance program for affected airplanes meets or exceeds the required DTR, no further action is necessary unless the existing maintenance program is changed.
5.1.5  Existing maintenance programs should not be relaxed to specifically match required DTRs without considering the requirements for timely-detection of corrosion, stress corrosion, or accidental damage.
