MAINTENANCE MANUAL
(2)
When the fuel tanks are wet, the fungus shows as a black sludge or slimy material. When the fuel tanks are dry, the fungus shows as solid particles on the surface of the fuel tank. These deposits can be light brown when they dry. If there is fungus, it is usually limited to the lower panel of the wing and the areas adjacent to the lower panel where the water collects. Fungus can also cause corrosion of the structure. If corrosion is found, refer to the Structural Repair Manual.
(3)
Flow holes through the wing stringers let sump fuel and water drain to the lowest areas in the fuel tanks. These holes should be kept clear to prevent fuel and water accumulation when the fuel tanks are drained (Fig. 701).
(4)
Precaution and instructions for the use of wet steam.
(a)
The operator should wear insulated gloves, a full face mask and a rubber hood.
(b)
Use a steam line supplied with a "dead man" valve. Put one person out of the fuel tank to monitor the operation.
(c)
Use air movers to have a good flow of air through the fuel tanks. Continue to have a good flow of air to help remove the steam.
(d)
Do not point the steam at one location for a long time. Move the steam over an area at a rate of approximately 6 inches per second. You can move the steam over an area more than once.
(e)
Do not point the steam at the edge of the sealing compound as it can loosen the joint. Use a spray of approximately 100 psi, with a temperature of not more than 150°F at the tank surface. A long concentration of heat on the sealant can cause damage.
