WORLD
issue o2 2007
It has been more than 12 months since
Changi Airports International first secured
the contract to work with Abu Dhabi Airports
Company (ADAC) in order to jointly develop
Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA) as one
of the pivotal air hubs in the Middle East.
The scope of the collaboration has been
extensive. In essence, it is intended to enable
the existing airport deal with a surge in
passenger traffic and cargo volume while at
the same time ensure that the airport offers
world class standards in airport safety,
security, processes and service quality.
The growth of the volume of traffic at the
airport has been unrelenting. The monthly
passenger traffic for August 2007, for
example, grew 32% from the same period
last year while cargo grew by 14% on the
same basis. The projection is that the existing
airport, designed for a capacity of 6 mppa,
will be handling 6.5 mppa by the end of 2007.
Yet in the midst of this unenviable stretch of
its facilities, the airport managed to secure
two prestigious awards by the Airports
Council International (ACI) in the first quarter
of 2007. At the same time, ACI ratings of
passenger satisfaction of the airport grew
from 3.8 to 4.0 over the preceding 12 months
while the airside accidents involving aircraft
and equipment improved by more than 50%
from 0.06 to 0.03 per thousand aircraft
movements. Like Changi, the airport features
free internet, TV zones, dedicated smoking
areas and special check-in security
arrangements for premium passengers. It

also has an indoor taxi queue system which
enables arriving passengers to wait in airconditioned
comfort for ground
transportation pick-ups. This is the first time
that such processes have been introduced
in the UAE and the Gulf region. During this
period, the airport also successfully mounted
the program for implementing controls of
liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) – indeed,
one of the few airports in the region to be
capable of handling this. October marked
another milestone for ADIA when it secured
Internal Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)
certification for security audit programme,
the first UAE airport to do so.
ADAC must be justifiably proud of these
accomplishments. It has an impressive team
of management personnel in place and there
is no doubt that this will increasingly carve
a place for the airport among the ranks of
international airports with a growing
reputation for efficiency and quality. The
reward for Changi is the privilege to
participate in this exciting development. We
are particularly pleased that it brings home
the message that the essence of the fabled
“Changi Experience” in terms of service
quality and efficiency are transferable. I want
to take this opportunity to congratulate
ADAC, our partner in Abu Dhabi, and the
Changi team consisting of both the resident
and non-resident specialists involved in
this contract.
