The interest of the kit is to offer calibration specimens representative of PLY numbers .
Thus it will be possible to calibrate the ultrasonic instrument with specimens having a number of plies
corresponding to the actual structure and to assess for damage delamination position in term of ply number
depth.
The specimens are specified in ply numbers and are largely representative of thin and thick structures.
The Specimen Kit
The kit is constituted of a series of carbon parts . Some
are laminates, some are sandwich made .
Each laminate specimen represents the structure as it
could appear to the operator when analysing a structure
- plain carbon,
- carbon with paint primary,
- carbon with paint,
- carbon with bronze mesh
Thus , it will be possible for the operator to get a
reference for a signal corresponding exactly to the
structure thickness as it appears to him .
The use of areas with primer and metallization mesh
will be useful to differentiate between true signals as
sent back by coatings or true defects .
The sandwich specimens represent a structure with a
central debonding defect.
Two specimens are delivered painted, with and without
bronze metallisation mesh.

Application to Water Detection
in Airbus Elevators
In this section, we descrbe the Equipment develoipped by GMI for AIRBUS to implement the service bulletins for
the detection of water in the elevators. This applies presently to Airbus A340 , 330 , A320,A 300 of certain generations.
There are 2 kits :
- 1°- Kit applicable to family A340-A330
-2°- Kit applicable to family A300-A300-600
Each kit si constituted of two sub kits :
- A Heating Kit of thermal blankets adapted to the process and to the shape and dimensions of the elevator
- A Temperature and process controller
This Thermal Kit is completed by the use of a Thermal Camera as recommended by AIRBUS

THERMOGRAPHY KIT FOR AIRBUS A340-A330
The kit has for objectives to provide all the means to heat slightly the elevator structure box in order to be able
to proceed to a thermal image scanning to detect the presence of water in the structure closing panels . Rfer to
Airbus Service Bulletins for the complete description of the process and procedure .
KIT CONSTITUTION
The kit is constituted of :
- 1°- A Heating kit made of thermal mats
designed specifically
-2°- A Process controller .
THE HEATING KIT
- For this specific process, a series of heating mats has
been designed appropriately .
These blankets have two main particularities :
- They are cut to cover exactly the upper skin of the
elevator . Placed side by side they fit completely and
perfectly all the surface to be analysed .
- They have a power design and an electric scheme
to provide the necessary temperature control and heat performances with regard of the constraints of the infra
red thermal imaging process and the safety rules induced by the task to be conducted on the aircraft .
The heating mat is built with internal temperature
sensors ; the operator has not to care about the
positioning of any thermocouple or other sensor.
Connection to the controller is through appropriate
cables. Connectors are mounted at the end of reinforced
long tabs .
The heating mats are designed to be used on left and
right elevators .
The heating process has been set up so that it is only
necessary to heat the upper closing sandwich panel of
the elevator to analyse with the camera the presence
of water in the upper panel as well as in the lower
