Depending on substrate material, it may be more feasible to plate all over, mask, and strip back rather than mask for plating.
(4)
Visually inspect plating.

(5)
Check and, as required, grind, polish, or hone the plated surface to required size and/or finish.

(6)
Visually inspect.

J.  Method No. 403J: Styli Electroplating
Parts not meeting manual limits may be processed to size by styliplating in accordance with MIL-STD-865 applicable specifications.
NOTE:  If surfaces to be plated meet all drawing requirements except dimensional, 0.0002 to
0.010 inch thickness of plating per surface can be applied depending upon base metal and plating solutions used. If a sequence of grind-plate-grind is to be used, the minimum plate should be 0.001 inch thick per surface.
Most plating will utilize nickel solutions and, in the case of Inco 718 material, nickel plating is much preferable to chromium plating.
(1)
If necessary, grind the nonconforming surface to prepare for styli plate, allowing 0.001 to

0.010 inch maximum thickness of plating per surface. Maintain balance of manual requirements and hold stock removal uniform to facilitate plating.

(2)
Visually inspect.

(3) Mask as required and plate the surfaces to required size per process control card.
NOTE:  Pre- and post-plate baking requirements shall be in accordance with the applicable plating specification.
Finish dimensional tolerance may necessitate overplating to allow for subsequent finishing per Step (5).
(4)
Inspect plating.

(5)
Check and as required, grind, polish or hone the plated surface to size.

Visually inspect.

K.  Method No. 403K: Repair of Damaged Paint Coatings - Epoxy-Amine Systems NOTE: Chips larger than 1/2 inch diameter shall be repaired by the original painting facility.
(1)
Remove loose and chipped paint by sanding with 120-grit wet-or-dry paper.

(2)
Blow dust off part with clean compressed air.

(3)
Lightly sand (600 grit) to feather edges of paint.

(4)
Solvent-wipe with clean cloth saturated with acetone or ketone.

CAUTION: POST LIFE OF MIXED MATERIALS IS 8 HOURS.  ADHERE STRICTLY TO POT LIFE LIMIT OF MIX; MARK TIME AND DATE ON CUP.  ABSOLUTELY DO NOT REFRIGERATE OR ADD SOLVENT TO EXTEND TIME.

(5)
Touch up with an airbrush or soft brush; do not use cotton swabs.  Airbrushing is the preferred method. Refer to Figures 401 and 402. Allow 45 minutes reaction time after mixing base resin and catalyst thinner together before applying.

NOTE:  For paint mixing and curing, refer to the applicable paint specification.  Mix materials at room temperature (77° ± 10°F).

(6)
Air-dry newly applied paint for 20-30 minutes before using heat gun.

(7)
Apply heat to newly painted surface with a heat gun.  Allow 10-12 inch distance from end of heat gun to painted surface. Do not exceed 200°F on part.  Heat part 30-45 minutes to cure. Paint must be fully cured prior to packaging part.
