(3) Test Mode
(a) When the self-test circuit is energized, a test enable signal is applied to the test generator and the beat frequency oscillator (BFO). The test generator applies a predetermined signal to the goniometer and the sense rf amplifier. The goniometer phasing is unbalanced and causes the receiver to slew to a null position. With a signal applied to the sense rf amplifier, a predetermined sense signal is processed by the ADF receiver. By comparing the loop and sense outputs, a relative bearing of 315 degrees is displayed on the RDDMI's during self-test. In TEST mode a relay disables input from the loop antenna to prevent strong broadcast signals from entering the test loop.

AUTOMATIC DIRECTION FINDER SYSTEM - TROUBLE SHOOTING

1. General
_______
A. The following trouble shooting procedures are based on performance of the system operational test and are presented in a tree-type format to aid in rapid fault isolation.
B. When a test step does not check out, find the box containing the trouble symptom and perform the stated action. Continue to follow a single line by analyzing the results of each test step until the required corrective action is determined. Perform the specified corrective action, then repeat the step at which the failure was encountered and complete the test to check out the system.
C. Since two ADF (automatic direction finder) systems are installed, trouble shooting can be performed by swapping suspect units between the systems.
D. The TFR (transfer) switch allows a second frequency to be preselected. During trouble shooting the preselect feature should be checked out whenever changing frequencies. If the frequency indicator or the frequency transfer light of the active frequency does not illuminate or the receiver does not respond to the frequency change, the control panel should be replaced.
E. All trouble shooting procedures are based on the assumption that wiring is OK and that electrical power is available. If the corrective action in the procedure does not correct the problem, check wiring using the wiring diagram.
2. Prepare for Trouble Shooting

A. Supply electrical power (AMM 24-22-00/201).
B. Make sure these circuit breakers are closed:
Panel P18_________ Panel P6
ADF-1 ADF-2 INST XFRMR-1 INST XFRMR-2
C. Make sure the captain's and the first officer's 5 volt ac circuit breakers located on the P41 and P42 panels are closed.
D. Make sure the flight interphone system is on (AMM 23-51-00/501).
