CES  COMMUNICATIONS - GENERAL - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

____________________________________________________
 1.
 General

_______ The communication system allows crew members to communicate with each other, from the cockpit and from the ground. They can also communicate with the passengers, other aircraft and the ground stations.

 2.
 Description

___________
 A. Speech communication & radio management
 This system comprise:

 (1)
HF/CALSEL/AEROCALL system (Ref. 23-11) (if installed) The transceivers and associated equipment allow long range voice communications.

 (2)
Very High Frequency system (VHF) (Ref. 23-12) The transceivers and associated equipment allow short range voice communications. The VHF3 system (if installed) is also used to transmit data (ACARS or ATSU).

 (3)
Radio management (RMP) (Ref. 23-13) The RMPs enable a centralized frequency control of the VHF and HF (if installed) radio communication equipment. The RMPs also enable the frequency control of radio navigation equipment (VOR, DME, ILS, ADF) in case of failure of the FMGEC.

 (4)
Voice privacy system (Ref. 23-14) The voice privacy system provides a means for coding HF communications between the aircraft and DT.HU.Department in order to protect confidential communications.

 B. Data transmission and automatic calling
 This system comprises of:

 (1) Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System (ACARS) (Ref. 23-24) (if installed) The ACARS management unit allows management of the data transmitted to the ground (SDAC, FWC, AIDS, CFDS, FMGEC) and entered by the crew. It also allows reception, printing and display of ground messages on the MCDU. These data are transmitted through the VHF3 system (if installed) (or through the SATCOM system (if installed)).

 (2) Satellite Communication (SATCOM) (Ref. 23-28) (if installed) The function of the SATCOM system is the reception and processing of signals via satellites providing aeronautical services in the L-Band. The system provides a capability for all aeronautical satellite communication requirements external to the aircraft, including cockpit voice, passenger telephone and data services.

 C. Passenger Address and Entertainment (Ref. 23-30)
 This system comprises of:

-prerecorded announcements and boarding music system (PRAM) (Ref. 23-32)
 -
passenger Entertainment System Music/Passenger Service System (PES Music/PSS) (Ref. 23-33)

 -
passenger Visual Information System (PVIS) (Ref. 23-34)

 -
passenger Air-to-ground Telephone System (PATS) (Ref. 23-35)

 -
passenger Entertainment System Video (PES Video) (Ref. 23-36)

 -
passenger AM/FM radio system facility (Ref. 23-37) The Passenger Address System (PAS) (Ref. 23-31) is part of the Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS) (Ref. 23-73).

 D. Interphone
 This system comprise:

 (1)
Mechanic Call System (Ref. ATA 23-42) The mechanic call system enables communication with the mechanic from the flight compartment or with the pilot from the ground. Moreover, when the aircraft is battery supplied, the system includes an audio function for the following systems:

 -APU fire
 -ADIRS supplied by batteries
 -ventilation of faulty equipment
 -ELT operation (if installed)

 (2)
Cabin and Flight Crew Interphone System (Ref. 23-43) The cabin and flight crew interphone system is described in the Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS).

 (3)
Service Interphone (Ref. 23-44) The service interphone system provides telephone communication on the ground between the flight crew and the ground personnel service. Service interphone jacks are available for ground personnel use at different locations on the aircraft.

 E. Audio Integrating System (AIS) (Ref. 23-51) The audio integrating system integrates and allows easy selection of all audio signals (audio outputs, microphone inputs, sidetone and push-to-talk) produced by and feeding the radio communication and radio navigation systems. The system also provides SELCAL, part of call and flight interphone functions.
