The role of domestic airports in the Kingdom has
been reviewed by Saudi leaders and, under their
instruction, 23 airports throughout the Kingdom will
be upgraded. Hence, GACA will initiate the construction
process to improve the operation of these
airports as passenger numbers increase – 2007 and
2008 saw approximately 12 million passengers pass
through these airports.
There is serious competition in the aviation sector
in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and two new aviation
companies have appeared (Sama and NAS) to
compete with the Kingdom’s first airline (Saudi Arabian
Airlines), and another airline (Alwafeer) is also
competing. GACA works hard to upgrade domestic
airports, with total expenditure over the three years
from 2007 to 2009 at approximately 400 million
dollars. The result is very positively represented by
the construction of new airports in regions and cities
across Saudi Arabia.
The upgrading momentum continues. GACA has
recently put into motion an upgrading strategy for
Domestic Airports over the next five years, which
will cost an estimated 2.4 billion dollars. The strategy
includes upgrading and construction projects in
various Domestic Airports.
Decision makers at GACA have emphasized the
importance of future vision and they are considering
the expected economical, social and behavioural
variances as a base for future upgrading of airports.
Hence, GACA has prepared drawings for 13 Domestic
Airports indicating the future developments of
the airports, and of the provinces in which these
airports are located, over the next 30 years. The plans
have been supervised by experts in different fields.
On the other hand, the annual budget for the
running expenditure is approximately 133 million
dollars, including maintenance contracts, employee
salaries, administrative expenditure, CFR contracts
and computer services. Maintaining the properties
at various Domestic Airports is an important issue
to achieve maximum utilization of the existing
projects, whereas the maintenance contract of the
23 Domestic Airports for the years 2007 and 2008 is
approximately 126 million dollars.
The huge amounts allocated for the upgrading
and construction of Domestic Airports within the
last three years, ie, 400 million dollars, and the future
allocated amounts, which is 2.4 billion dollars, is clear
evidence that GACA is intending to achieve its established
goals. GACA is a regional pioneer in airports.
