THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY of EUROCONTROL
is a time to celebrate an organisation
that has successfully met countless technical,
regulatory and political challenges on
the way to contributing to the safety and
effi ciency of air transport over the skies
of Europe.
The establishment of EUROCONTROL itself
represents a unique milestone. Beginning
with a solid core of six States, it now boasts
a membership of 38 Members that have
coalesced into an eff ective multi-national
entity capable of responding to the often
varied interests and needs of its constituents
within the context of the European Union.

A global collaboration
It has had the ability and the wisdom to
continually reinvent itself through revisions
to its convention; through pioneering new
concepts such as Flexible Use Airspace and
Reduced Vertical Separation Minima and
providing fi rst class innovative facilities such
as the Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre,
the Central Flow Management Unit and the
European AIS Database.
One of the most formidable undertakings
is certainly the development and implementation
of the Single European Sky (SES)
concept. Seamless pan-European airspace
is essential for quantum improvements in
safety, effi ciency, security and obviously
