cooperative agreements to open previously inaccessible
airspace for the benefi t of commercial passengers. And,
during its fi fth decade, EUROCONTROL has been a prime
mover, along with the European Commission, for the creation
of the ‘Holy Grail’ – the SES. There is no question that
without the painstaking work that EUROCONTROL has carried
out over the past 50 years, the chances of such a plan
coming to fruition would have been very much reduced.
There is still much to be done before the SES becomes
a reality. But, EUROCONTROL will remain central to it.
WHEN THE FIRST commercial jet aircraft fl ight took
off from London’s Heathrow airport, en route to Johannesburg,
on 2 May 1952, it signalled a step-change in the
way commercial aviation was headed. No longer was it to
remain a leisure activity, based mainly on pleasure fl ights
for their own sake, it was very soon to become the main
travel option for those bound on long international and
domestic journeys.
Where once it had taken six weeks to travel to Australia
and three weeks to get to America, these journeys could
now be completed in under a day. Naturally, air travel
grew rapidly and relentlessly. Only major international
crises have ever stemmed the unremitting increase in
passenger fl ights.
For Europe, where a great many of these fl ights were
increasingly taking place, it became apparent that in
order to ensure safety and effi ciency, a system was
required that went beyond the UN International Civil
Aviation Organization rules and regulations, and,
hence, EUROCONTROL.
Since the early days, when the six founding
States signed the initial agreement in December
1960, EUROCONTROL has grown into the bedrock of
European aviation and has pioneered some of the most
technologically advanced systems and procedures.
From the outset, the Agency has looked to the future
and realised that pan-European collaboration had to be
developed over as wide a spread of nations as possible.
Now with 38 Member States and with the European
Commission also joining as a member, EUROCONTROL
can quite rightly say that it has set in place the groundwork
for Europe’s most ambitious project, the Single
European Sky (SES).
