the complex issues associated with lowering
it still further.
The wider adoption of Mode-S transponders
during the decade has also helped
to increase capacity and improve safety.
Transponders encode ATC radar with information
specifi c to each aircraft, but the
unsophisticated nature of earlier transponders
led to cluttering of screens, overlapping
of signals and ambiguity of information,
referred to by controllers as ‘garble’
and ‘fruit’. Mode-S transponders provide an
uncorrupted signal that often allows more
effi cient use of airspace.
Again, aircraft operators must be convinced
there’s a payback in terms of increased
effi ciency before they will pay for the
equipment, and among airlines EUROCONTROL’s
