4. Adjust the Propeller Control Cable
DA 40 Series
Detail Steps/Work Items Key Items/References
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU DO ANY WORK ON THE PROPELLER CONTROLS. IF THE ENGINE IS TURNED, THE PROPELLER CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
(1) Make sure that the engine is safe: S Set the ignition switch to OFF. S Set the throttle to IDLE. S Set the mixture control to LEAN CUT-OFF.
(2) Remove the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-10.
(3) Disconnect the spark plug cables from the spark plugs. Refer to Section 74-00.
(4) Move the propeller control lever in the cockpit between MIN RPM and MAX RPM. S Make sure that the lever moves freely with no restrictions.
(5) Set the propeller control lever to MAX RPM and hold it in position: S Make sure that the control lever at the propeller governor hits the MAX stop at the governor. If necessary, adjust the control cable outer sheath at the support bracket at propeller governor. With the propeller control lever at the MAX stop at the governor, there must be at least 3 mm (0.125 in.) clearance (bounce) between the propeller control lever in the cockpit and the stop in the engine control assembly.
(6) Set the propeller control lever to MIN RPM and hold it in position: S Make sure that the control lever at the propeller governor hits the MIN stop at the governor. If necessary, adjust the control cable outer sheath at the support bracket at propeller governor. With the propeller control lever at the MIN stop at the governor, there must be at least 3 mm (0.125 in.) clearance (bounce) between the propeller control lever and the stop in the engine control assembly.

(7) Move the propeller control lever in the cockpit between MIN RPM and MAX RPM. S Make sure that the lever moves freely with no restrictions.
(8) Do items 5 & 6 again as necessary to get the correct values. It may be necessary to move the cable wire-end in the cable attachment bolt.
(9) If necessary, for your airworthiness authority, do a second inspection of the propeller control system.
(10) Connect the spark plug cables to the spark plugs. Refer to Section 74-00.
(11) Install the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-10.
(12) Do an engine run-up. For RPM settings and engine run-up, refer to the Airplane Flight Manual.

% Section 61-21 % Propeller Control - TAE 125 Diesel Engine % 1. General
% The DA 40 with the TAE 125 Diesel engine installed has a constant speed propeller. The engine has % an integral constant speed unit (CSU). The CSU controls the engine speed by changing the propeller % blade angle (pitch).
% This Section gives background data about the propeller control system. You cannot do any % maintenance on the CSU or the related engine control system. There is no trouble-shooting data. If you % find any trouble with the propeller control system, refer to the engine manufacturer.
% 2. Description and Operation
% The DA 40 has an mt-Propeller constant speed propeller. The propeller uses oil pressure to increase % the blade angle (pitch). In normal flight the centrifugal twisting moment (CTM) of the blade and the % return spring cause the blade to move towards fine pitch.
