Section 34-56
Transponder (XPDR)

1. General
This Section tells you about the transponder system which can be installed in the DA 40. Refer to the manufacturer's manuals for more data about the equipment. Refer to Chapter 92 for the wiring diagrams.
The transponder system consists of the following items: ) Transponder. One of the following transponders can be installed in the DA 40: ) Bendix/King KT 76A. ) Bendix/King KT 76C. %) Garmin GTX 327. %) Blind Altitude Encoder. One of the following blind altitude encoders can be installed in the DA 40: ) TCI Altitude Digitizer D120-P2-T. %) Sandia Aerospace Altitude Data System SAE5-35. ) Transponder antenna.
2. Description and Operation
A. Transponders, General
The transponder is a receiver/transmitter which operates at radar frequencies. It transmits transponder code and altitude data to the Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System (ATCRBS).
The transponder replies to interrogation signals from the ATCRBS mode A secondary surveillance radar (SSR) at 1030 MHz. The reply signal at 1090 MHz gives the code which can be set on the cockpit display. A REPLY indication comes on when the equipment is transmitting.
The transponder can also give altitude data in reply to mode C interrogation. The transponder transmits data from the blind encoding altimeter to the ATCRBS.
The transponder has an ident button (IDENT or IDT). Push the ident button to transmit a special identification pulse. The ident pulse identifies the airplane to the air traffic controller.

B. Bendix/King KT 76A Transponder
Figure 1 shows the Bendix/King KT 76A transponder. It is located in the instrument panel at the % bottom, see Chapter 31.
The avionics bus or, if installed, the essential avionics bus supplies power to the transponder. The ALT/BAT switch and the AVIONICS MASTER switch must be set to ON to supply power through the XPDR circuit-breaker to the transponder. Refer to Chapter 92 for the wiring diagrams.
