Trouble-Shooting
1. General
The table below lists the defects you could have in the propeller control system. If you have the trouble detailed in the Trouble column read across to the Possible Cause column. Then do the repair in the Repair column. Refer to the propeller manufacturers for more data.
Trouble Possible Cause Repair
Engine vibration. Propeller out of balance. Spinner out of balance. Propeller mounting loose. The spinner attaching screws loose. Blade tracking not correct. Examine the propeller. If you find damage refer to the manufacturer’s Owners Manual. Replace the spinner. Tighten the mounting nuts to the correct torque. Refer to the manufacturer’s Owners Manual. Tighten the attaching screws. Refer to the manufacturer’s Owners Manual. Refer to the manufacturer’s Owners Manual.
Surging RPM Air in propeller control system. Oil sludge in the propeller control system. Do a ground run-up. Move the propeller control lever from low rpm to high rpm. Do this at least 3 times to bleed the air. Remove the governor and remove the propeller. A specialist propeller repair station must clean the propeller and the governor. Flush the engine oil system.
More than 50 RPM difference during climb/cruise/dive (up to 50 RPM is normal). Friction in governor. Replace the governor.

Trouble Possible Cause Repair
Decrease in rpm during normal operation without moving the rpm control lever. Failure of governor spring. Replace the governor.
Increase in rpm during normal operation without moving the rpm control lever. Oil leak inside the propeller. Faulty governor drive. Faulty governor relief valve. Replace the propeller. Remove the governor. Repair/replace defective components. Replace the governor.

1. General
This section tells you how to remove/install the governor and how to test/adjust the governor. It also tells you how to replace/adjust the propeller control cable.

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU DO ANY WORK ON THE PROPELLER CONTROLS. IF THE ENGINE IS TURNED, THE PROPELLER CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH.
(1) Make sure that the engine is safe: S Set the ignition switch to OFF. S Set the throttle to IDLE. S Set the mixture control to LEAN CUT-OFF.
(2) Remove the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-10.
(3) Disconnect the spark plug cables from the spark plugs.
(4) Disconnect the cable wire-end from the governor control lever: S Loosen the nut of the attachment bolt. S Pull the cable wire-end clear. Refer to Figure 2.
(5) Remove the two screws which attach the cable support bracket to the propeller governor: S Remove the lock-wire. S Remove the screws and washers. S Move the propeller control cable and bracket clear of the governor.

(6) Release the four nuts and washers which attach the governor to the drive-pad and remove the governor from the engine. Use a container to catch the small amount of oil from the governor.
