The ADF system consists of the following items:
) ADF receiver.
%) ADF indicator (slaved or non-slaved).
) ADF antenna.
The audio panel controls the audio input from the ADF (refer to Section 23-50).
2. Description and Operation
The ADF gives bearing information, ground station identification, and reception of weather broadcasts in the AM band.
A. ADF Receiver
Figure 1 shows the Bendix/King KR 87 ADF receiver. It is located in the avionics rack in the % instrument panel, see Chapter 31.
%  The avionics bus supplies power to the ADF receiver. The ALT/BAT switch (Lycoming version) or
%  ELECTRIC MASTER key switch (TAE version) and the AVIONIC MASTER switch must be set to ON to supply power through the ADF circuit-breaker to the ADF receiver. Refer to Chapter 92 for the wiring diagrams.
The Bendix/King KR 87 is a compact, digitally-tuned, solid-state ADF receiver with built-in electronics timer. It gives bearing information to stations in the 200 kHz to 1799 kHz frequency band. It also gives audio reception so that the pilot can identify stations and listen to weather broadcasts in the AM broadcast band.

The ADF receiver has a gas-discharge display with automatic dimming that shows the following:
) The left window shows the 'active' frequency.
) The right window shows the 'standby' frequency or the selected readout from the built-in electronic timer (flight time or elapsed time).
) FRQ/FLT/ET indicators. These indicate which information is being shown in the right window (see above).
) ANT/ADF mode indicator. It indicates 'antenna' mode (ANT) or 'ADF' mode that is selected with the ADF button.
) BFO indicator. It indicates that the BFO mode is selected with the BFO button.
The ADF receiver has these controls:
) ON/OFF/VOL rotary switch. This switch controls power to the ADF. It also sets the audio volume.
) Frequency select knobs. The small knob is pulled out to tune the 1′s. The small knob is pushed in to tune the 10′s. The outer knob tunes the 100′s with rollover into the 1000′s up to 1799. When the right window is set to standby frequency (FRQ) mode, then the knobs change the 'standby' frequency. When a timer mode (FLT or ET) is selected, then the knobs change the 'active' frequency.
) ADF button. When the button is in, the ADF mode is selected. When the button is out, the 'antenna' (ANT) mode is selected. The loop antenna is disabled, and the unit simply acts as a receiver. The bearing pointer is deactivated and will park in the 90° relative position.
) BFO (beat frequency oscillator) button. It permits the carrier wave and associated morse code identifier broadcast on the carrier wave to be heard.
) FRQ (frequency transfer) button. It switches the right window to the 'FRQ' mode and exchanges the 'active' and 'standby' frequencies.
) FLT/ET (flight timer/elapsed timer mode selector) button. It alternatively selects either 'flight timer' mode or 'elapsed timer' mode.
) SET/RST (set/reset elapsed timer) button. When pressed, this button resets the elapsed timer (whether it is being displayed or not).
