Rotate MKR and INT controls on indicator front panel and observe indicator display. Display markers and intensity change as control is adjusted.

(3)  
Depress RNG switches, one at a time, on indicator front panel and observe indicator display. Range, located in message slot 3 (Fig. 501), changes with range selection. There are four evenly spaced range circles for all ranges except the l0nm range has two.

(4)  
Place thumb over photocell on indicator front panel. Check display markers, azimuth marks, range marks and CRT intensity decreases.

(5)  
Depress LFT pushbutton on indicator. Check sweep origin moves to right corner of the display.

(6)  
Depress RGT pushbutton on indicator. Check sweep origin moves to left corner of the display.

(7)  
Depress FWD pushbutton on indicator. Check sweep origin moves to center of display.

(8)  
If no further test of weather radar are required perform weather radar shutdown procedure.

C.  Prepare to Test Weather Radar System
(1)  
Place airplane such that it is pointed away from any large metal objects and toward an open area so antenna selector scan includes hills or mountains preferably at various heights in the distance.

(2)  
Place personnel warning lights around front of airplane in prominent areas to assure their visibility is optimum.


CAUTION:  DO NOT OPERATE WEATHER RADAR WHILE THE AIRPLANE IS BEING REFUELED OR DEFUELED AND DO NOT OPERATE IN ANY RADIATING MODE WHILE A FUELING OPERATION IS BEING CONDUCTED WITHIN 200 FEET OF THE ANTENNA OR AN EXPLOSION MAY OCCUR.
PERSONNEL MUST NOT ENTER AN AREA CLOSER THAN 10 FEET IN FRONT OF A RADIATING ANTENNA OR INJURY TO PERSONNEL MAY OCCUR.
(3)  
Provide electrical power (Ref 24-22-00).

(4)  
Close following circuit breakers on electronic circuit breaker panel P6:
WEA RAD R/T
WEA RAD IND
VG-2


(5)  
On indicator, verify STAB pushbutton is in (stab on).

(6)  
Position VG transfer switch to NORMAL.


D.  Perform Weather Radar Operational Test
E.  Mode Test
(1)  
Prepare for test as described in par. C.

(2)  
On indicator, depress WX pushbutton.

(3)  
Select desired range, and adjust TILT control to obtain optimum targets. Check indicator for following:

(a)  
Target returns appear clearly on display.

(b)  
WX displayed in message slot 1 (Fig. 501).

(c)  
Selected range displayed in message slot 3.

(d)  
Corresponding range interval of selected range displayed in message slot 5.

(e)  
Color bar directly below WX.

(f)  
Tilt setting displayed in message slot 14.

 

(4)  
On indicator, depress GCS pushbutton. Check IDNT is displayed in message slot 11 (Fig. 501).

(5)  
On indicator, depress WX/T pushbutton. Check WX/T displayed in message slot 1, target and IDNT remain displayed.

(6)  
On indicator, depress IDNT and MAP pushbutton. Check MAP is displayed in message slot 1, target returns appear clearly on display and IDNT is no longer displayed.

(7)  
On indicator, depress HOLD pushbutton. Check message slot 2 (Fig. 501) for flashing HOLD.

(8)  
Depress HOLD pushbutton again. Check HOLD message no longer displayed.

(9)  
If no further tests of weather radar are required, perform weather radar shutdown procedures.

F.  Gain Test
(1)  
Prepare for test as described in par. C.

(2)  
On indicator, depress MAP pushbutton.

(3)  
On indicator, rotate GAIN control to fully CW position. Check MAX is displayed in message slot 10 (Fig. 501).

(4)  
Slowly rotate GAIN control from fully CW to fully CCW position. Check indicator gain message changes as control is rotated.
