WARNING:  THE TARGET ALERT FUNCTION IS NOT TO BE USED AS THE PRIME SOURCE FOR STORM, TERRAIN, OR OTHER OBJECT AVOIDANCE.
11)  TGT ALRT (target alert) switch/indicator - When pressed, the target alert mode is activated and is indicated by the letter T in a red rectangle on the upper left corner of the indicator display. If a contourable target (red indication at a preset gain) occurs in the target alert window 75 to 150 NM range and 15 degrees left or right of dead ahead, a TGT alert label (Fig. 4) in a red rectangle will be flashed on and off at 1/2 second intervals on the indicator display.

12)  INT (intensity) control - Varies the intensity of video on the display.
13)  GAIN control - In PRESET (detented) position, sets the level of the IF and video amplifiers to a level based on the receiver noise level. This level is automatically utilized when CYC and TEST modes are selected. The variable gain manual (out-of-detent) position is operable only in WX and MAP modes. Receiver noise on the display should increase when the GAIN control is rotated clockwise.
14)  AZIM (azimuth marker) switch/indicator - When activated, displays azimuth strobe lines 30 degrees apart.
(f)  The indicator also contains circuitry for generating alphanumerics used to display information on the CRT screen. The different types of indications are as follows: 1) Mode field - Appears on lower left corner of display. Selected mode is displayed
as STBY, WX, or MAP. PUSH is displayed when an "all buttons out" condition exists. WAIT is displayed if indicator is synchronizing with antenna or during warm-up. TEST is displayed when RANGE selector is in test position, but is overridden by STBY, WAIT, or PUSH modes. ANT is displayed as a blinking word when the antenna is not sweeping because of an antenna failure.
2)  Sub-mode field - Appears just above mode field in lower left corner of display. FRZ is displayed as a blinking word when FRZ control is activated, but is blanked out in STBY, WAIT, or PUSH mode. VAR is displayed if GAIN control is out of PRESET position. VAR is overridden by FRZ.
3)  Target field - Appears in upper left corner of display when TGT ALRT is selected. The letter(s) T or TGT will be displayed in a red rectangle.
4)  Auxiliary field - Displays color bar legend and level numbers: 1, 2, and 3. In weather mode, colors are green, yellow, and red; and in map mode, colors are cyan, yellow, and magenta.
5)  Range mark identifiers - Five labeled range mark identifiers are displayed in cyan for WX and green for MAP.
D.  System shutdown procedures.
(1)  Perform in the sequence.
(a)
On weather radar indicator perform following:
1) Select STBY.
2) Position TILT control to zero.
3) Position GAIN to PRE-SET.
4) Turn INT fully ccw.
5) Position RANGE to 100.
6) Select OFF.

(b)
Remove external electrical power if no longer required (Ref 24-22-00, MP).

WEATHER RADAR - TROUBLE SHOOTING
EFFECTIVITY

Airplanes With Sperry Primus 90 Weather Radar
1. General
A.  The following trouble shooting procedures are based on performance of the system operational test and are presented in tree-type format.
B.  The self-test feature incorporated in the system provides a quick means of evaluating system performance. When the TEST mode is selected, a special test pattern is generated (Fig. 101) for evaluation of a large portion of the system. Fault monitoring circuitry is provided in the system and will alter the test pattern if a malfunction is detected. By utilization of the internally generated test pattern, the system is capable of detecting most faults without additional test equipment.
C.  When a test step does not check out, progress to the box containing the trouble symptom. Perform the specified corrective action; then repeat the step at which the failure was encountered. Continue to follow a single line by analyzing the results of each test step until the required corrective action is determined.
2.  Prepare for Trouble Shooting
A.  Observe the following precautions when operating the weather radar system.
WARNING:  DO NOT OPERATE WEATHER RADAR WHILE AIRPLANE IS BEING REFUELED OR DEFUELED AND DO NOT OPERATE IN ANY RADIATING MODE WHILE A FUELING OPERATION IS BEING CONDUCTED WITHIN 200 FEET OF THE ANTENNA OR AN EXPLOSION MAY OCCUR.
