EMERGENCY LIGHTS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
EFFECTIVITY
ATI INTERIOR
1.  General
A.  Emergency lighting automatically illuminates the exit areas and exit signs and emergency egress paths when normal lighting system power is lost. The emergency lights and signs can also be turned on by switch action of the flight crew or passenger cabin attendants.
2.  Interior Emergency Lights
A.  Interior emergency lights are 6-volt incandescent lights that illuminate the passenger aisle, exit signs, exit locator signs and the flight compartment. The aisle lights are spaced along the bullnose of the passenger stowage bins over the aisle. The exit signs mount on door frames above entry and service doors and overwing hatches. Exit locator signs are mounted on the bulkhead at ends of the passenger cabin, on the bullnose of the lowered ceiling, and in the ceiling over the aisle between emergency overwing hatches. Exit signs have a lens on the bottom surface for area illumination and the exit signs over each escape hatch have an additional light at each end of the sign directed to illuminate the placard on the hatch operating handle. The flight compartment emergency light is mounted in the left dome light.
3.  Exterior Emergency Lights
A.  Exterior emergency lights are 6-volt incandescent lights that are directed to illuminate the paths of deployed emergency evacuation slides. A single lamp light is flush-mounted on the fuselage aft of each entry or service door to illuminate the slide path for these doors. A dual lamp light and a single lamp light are flush-mounted on the fuselage to illuminate each overwing slide path.
4.  Emergency Lights Control Panel
A.  The emergency lights control panel is located on the pilot's P5 overhead panel. It consists of guarded 3-position (ON/ARMED/OFF) toggle switch, guarded to ARMED, and NOT ARMED indicator light. The toggle switch is labeled EMER EXIT LIGHTS and controls all emergency lights. In the ARMED position, all emergency lights come on automatically when electrical power is lost. When the switch is not in the ARMED position, the NOT ARMED indicator light illuminates and the master caution is activated. In the ON or OFF position, all emergency lights are either on or off, respectively.
5.  Power Supplies
A.  The emergency lights power supplies are installed on entry light panels and on the center air conditioning duct. Each supply operates up to eight lights. The power supplies contain battery packs and charging/logic circuits. The power supply powers the lights for at least 15 minutes whenever electrical power is lost, or until the electrical power is restored. The battery packs require a minimum of 16 hour charging cycle after discharge.
