Pitot Heads and Static Ports ....................................................................................CLEAR OF ICE
Water rundown resulting from snow removal may refreeze immediately forward of static ports
and cause an ice buildup which causes disturbed airflow over the static ports and erroneous static
reading even though static ports themselves are clear.
Landing Gear.................................................................................................................. CHECKED
Landing gear doors unobstructed and free of impacted ice or snow.
Check brakes, wheels, and wheel wells for snow, slush, or ice. Clean with mechanical means.
Use hot air for frozen brakes. Avoid chemical deicer.
NOSE STRUT ADVERSE WEATHER SERVICE
At extreme cold ambient temperatures, the possibility exists that the nose landing gear strut may
bottom out during heavy braking. The following chart provides recommended nose strut
pressures for cold weather operations.
NOTE: This chart is for checking and adjusting strut service pressure only and not for full strut
servicing.
The chart indicates the pressures in the strut for a specific strut extension versus the effects of
ambient OAT. This is based upon the strut being serviced at a standard day temperature, 248
psig in the strut with 13.04 inches of chrome on jacks.
As the strut is compressed or the airplane settles on the struts, the pressure in the strut will
increase. Full compression of the strut from 13.04 to 2.34 inches, will compress the existing 248
psig up to 1552 psig. Simply stated, as temperature in a sealed vessel or chamber rise, the
pressure will rise and vice versa.
Should an airplane experience a -40°C (-40°F) cold soak, and require shock strut servicing, the
chrome or strut extension may be used to determine the required nitrogen charge.
