ENGINE START
The following procedures are required any time oil temperature is -10°C or colder.
Minimum Oil Temperature for starting -40°C.
Parking Brake............................................................................................................................SET
Engine starting after prolonged cold soak requires special care and attention. Preheating the
engine prior to any start is highly recommended.
If preheat facilities are not available, an alternate preheat procedure is:
1. Air Conditioning Packs.......................................................................................................OFF
2. Cowl Anti-Ice....................................................................................................................... ON
Allow APU Bleed Air to run through the Cowl Anti-Ice valves for a minimum of 10 minutes
depending on OAT.
3. Cowl Anti-Ice......................................................................................................................OFF
Before engine start, run each engine through a crank cycle. Allow LP and HP rotation to achieve
maximum levels (5 to 6% LP and 20 to 22% HP).
1. If the start valve does not open or no rotation is achieved, discontinue the crank cycle.
2. Repeat Preheat Steps 1 thru 3 for an additional ten (10) minutes and re-attempt the crank
cycle.
3. If the start valve still does not open, the valve should be manually opened and closed (No
Air Source ON) until the valve moves freely.
4. Repeat the crank cycle.
If the start valve does not indicate open or air duct pressure drop is not observed, the start valve
solenoid may be frozen. Ground heating may be necessary to warm the start valve. Start engine
as soon as possible after thawing to prevent refreezing. If air duct pressure drop does not occur,
select cowl anti-ice ON until HP RPM rotation indication is observed. If air duct pressure drop
is still not observed, use MANUAL START procedure. See Appendix C for Manual Start
procedure.

Prior to dispatch, start each engine using normal STARTING ENGINES Checklist with the
following modifications:
1. Prior to selecting the HP Fuel Cock to OPEN, allow each engine to achieve maximum LP
and HP rotation (5 to 6% LP and 20 to 22% HP). Use an outside observer to visually
confirm positive LP rotation.
CAUTION: BE ALERT FOR POTENTIAL HOT START INDICATIONS.
IF HOT START INDICATIONS ARE PRESENT, DISCONTINUE THE START
IMMEDIATELY AND COMPLY WITH HOT START PROCEDURES,
SECTION 3.
IF THE START IS ABORTED, PERFORM A CRANK CYCLE PRIOR TO
ATTEMPTING ANOTHER START.
2. After both engines are started, complete the AFTER STARTING ENGINES Checklist.
Allow the engines to operate at idle until the oil temperature is above -30°C (-22°F). It is
recommended that all engine parameters achieve normal range temperature and pressure
prior to flight.
AFTER ENGINE START
Instruments ............................................................................................... NORMAL OPERATION
The engine instruments should indicate approximately normal within a short time after reaching
idle speed.
Engine Oil Pressure..............................................................................................................CHECK
During cold weather starts, oil pressure may temporarily exceed maximum pressure limits until
oil temperature rises. At low ambient temperatures, a temporary high pressure above maximum
limits may be tolerated but takeoff should be delayed until pressure drops below maximum
limits.
Cowl/Wing Anti-Ice................................................................................................AS REQUIRED
Cowl/Wing anti-icing must be ON during all ground and flight operations when icing conditions
exist or are anticipated.

Icing does not usually occur below -40°C in climb and cruise.
In icing conditions vibration levels may rise and fall as spontaneous shedding occurs.
To assist in shedding ice, should operational circumstances permit, one thrust lever at a time may
