LANDING CONDITIONS (GROSS WEIGHT AND INITIAL BRAKING SPEED)
FOR BRAKE ENERGY INSPECTION
Initial brake application at high ground speeds can cause high brake temperatures which could
result in damage to the brake housing assemblies. Landing gross weight limits from this chart
should be observed if a brake inspection is to be avoided. This data assume:
• No Reverse Thrust
• Manual or Auto Spoiler
• Anti-Skid ON or OFF
The data are further based on the assumption that full braking is applied 1.0 second after main
gear touchdown which is also the basis for the scheduled landing distances.
EXAMPLE 1: Find the maximum landing gross weight for which brake inspection is not
required.
Given: Airport Ambient Temperature...............................................................................8° C
Airport Pressure Altitude ..............................................................................10,000 ft.
Runway Slope ........................................................................................................-2%
Headwind ........................................................................................................20 knots
Flaps ........................................................................................................................39°
Solution:
A. Enter the LANDING CONDITIONS FOR BRAKE ENERGY INSPECTION Chart
at 8°, then read right to intersect the 10,000 AIRPORT PRESSURE ALTITUDE
line.
B. Proceed down to the REFERENCE LINE of the RUNWAY SLOPE correction grid,
then follow the guidelines down to -2%.
C Proceed down to the REFERENCE LINE of the WIND COMPONENT correction
grid, then follow the guidelines up to 20 knots.
D. Proceed down to read 64,000 lbs. LANDING GROSS WEIGHT.
NOTE: This landing gross weight is not a limit to landing at higher gross weights, but
rather a guide for determining if a brake inspection is required due to excessive
kinetic energy absorption. Landing at gross weights in excess of that
determined by the LANDING CONDITIONS FOR BRAKE ENERGY
INSPECTION chart will require that the brakes be inspected (if full braking is
applied 1.0 second after main gear touchdown) in accordance with Dunlop
Component Maintenance Manuals 32-42-95 (Main Wheel) and 32-42-96
(Brake). Higher weight landings are still possible without requiring the
inspection if brake application is delayed until lower ground speeds as permitted
by excess runway length. The Initial Braking Speed for Brake Inspection chart
shows the speed which can be used for delayed braking to avoid an inspection.

EXAMPLE 2: Find the maximum airport ambient temperature for which brake inspection is not
required.
Given: Landing Gross Weight ..................................................................................66,000 lbs.
Airport Pressure Altitude ...................................................................................8000 ft.
Runway Slope ..........................................................................................................-2%
No Wind
Flaps..........................................................................................................................39°
Solution:
A. Enter the LANDING GROSS WEIGHT grid at 66,000 lbs. Proceed directly to the
WIND COMPONENT REFERENCE LINE.
B. Proceed directly up to the RUNWAY SLOPE correction grid with -2% and follow
the guidelines to the REFERENCE LINE.
C Proceed directly up to the AIRPORT PRESSURE ALTITUDE Chart to intersect the
8,000 ft. AIRPORT PRESSURE ALTITUDE line.
D. Read -3° C from the AIRPORT AMBIENT TEMPERATURE scale.
EXAMPLE 3: Find the initial braking speed which will not require a brake inspection.
Given: Airport Ambient Temperature ................................................................................8° C
Airport Pressure Altitude ................................................................................10,000 ft.
Runway Slope ..........................................................................................................-2%
Headwind ..........................................................................................................20 knots
Flaps..........................................................................................................................39°
Landing Gross Weight ..................................................................................64,000 lbs.
Solution:
A. Enter the INITIAL BRAKING SPEED FOR BRAKE INSPECTION chart at 8° C,
