For structural and non-structural laminates:
(a)
Use 240 grit, minimum, abrasive paper to remove the glossy finish of the laminate.
(b)
When you rub the surface, make sure you do not rub the glass fiber reinforcement.
(c)
Use a clean cheesecloth that is moist with TL-52 thinner to remove all remaining particles from the surface.
(d)
Before the thinner becomes dry, dry the surface with a clean dry cheesecloth.

(4) For nonstructural laminates only (optional):
(a)
Use the sand blast equipment to make the laminate surface lightly rough.
(b)
When you use the sand blast equipment on the surface, make sure you do not remove the fiberglass material.
(c)
Use TL-52 thinner to remove all remaining particles from the surface.
(d)
Before the thinner becomes dry, dry the surface with a clean dry cheesecloth.

(5) Prepare the surface porosity using the magna surface conditioner system (see SOPM 20-10-06 for additional surfacers and fillers if applicable):
NOTE: This system contains Magna 28-C-1 static conditioner and
____ Magna 8-W-5 surfacer. The static conditioner is used for microscopic holes and the surfacer for larger surface defects. Make sure you apply the static conditioner before you apply the surfacer.
CAUTION: THE USE OF FILLERS, PUTTIES, AND SURFACERS ARE EXCELLENT
_______ FOR PROVIDING SMOOTH SURFACES HOWEVER, APPLYING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF THOSE MAY CONTRIBUTE TO LONG-TERM PAINT CRACKING.
(a)
Use a clean cheesecloth to apply the Magna 28-C-1 static conditioner on the surface.
NOTE:____Do not make the static conditioner thin. Use sufficient pressure to push the static conditioner into the microscopic holes of the laminate.
(b)
Let the static conditioner dry for approximately 30 minutes at room temperature or higher (until it turns white).
(c)
Use a clean, dry cheesecloth to remove all the unwanted material from the laminate surface.
(d)
Mix the Magna 8-W-5 surfacer: 1) Mix 4 parts (by volume) of Magna 8-W-5 with 1 part (by
volume) of harder 50-C-3 or 10-C-32. 2) Fully mix the mixture. 3) Make the mixture thin with 1 part (by volume) of 66-C-28
reducer.
(e) Do not move or touch the mixture for 15 minutes before you apply it.
NOTE:____The pot life of the mixture is 6 hours at 70°F. Do not use mixture if the pot life has expired.
CAUTION: DO NOT USE MAGNA 8-W-5 SURFACER AS A FAIRING COMPOUND OR
_______ CONTOURING MATERIAL. MAGNA 8-W-5 SURFACER IS VERY HARD WHEN IT IS DRY AND NOT EASY TO RUB WITH ABRASIVE PAPER.
(f)
Use a brush, spray gun or cloth to apply the mixture.
(g)
Let the surfacer dry for 1 to 4 hours.

Rub the surface smooth with 150 grit (minimum) abrasive paper.
