 1.  Protective Finishes___________________
 A. General
 (1)
This procedure contains the maintenance of protective and exterior decorative finishes.

 (2)
In some procedures, it is necessary to use a powder with some form of chromic acid in it. As the result, there is a risk of fire unless you use the correct precautions. An example is alodine powder. This powder can start a fire if it touches organic solvents or materials that can burn such as paper or rags.

 (3)
Some procedures, which are not given in this manual, use equivalent powders that are dangerous. Examples of these powders are chromic acid anodizing, chromium plating and Dow 17 magnesium coating. The last example is Iridite, which is an aluminum corrosion coating, MIL-C5541, alternative to alodizing.

 (4)
Before you apply paint to the airplane surfaces, you must prepare the surfaces to receive the paint. The surface must be dry and free of dirt or oil. It is very important that you prepare the surfaces correctly to get the best results.

 (5)
The specified paint stripers will give the best results for the usual field work. Use other strippers with cautions since these strippers can cause corrosion to aluminum, magnesium, cadmium and steel.

 (6)
If the conversion coating surface is damaged, use a brush to apply alodine to the base metal for protection. Use Alodine 1200S, a clear coating, on the aluminum alloy parts but not on magnesium or magnesium alloys. If it is a magnesium surface, use Dow 19.

 (7)
These safety precautions are neccessary when you use solvents, cleaners, strippers, etchants or conversion coatings:

 (a)
Try not to breathe the solvent fumes. Do not use solvents in confined spaces without sufficient air or approved respiratory protection.

 (b)
Try not to get solvents, cleaners, etchants or coating materials on your skin. Wear rubber or plastic gloves when you use these materials. For surfaces above the head, wear goggles or plastic face shields, rubber raincoats and rain hats.

 (c)
Flush immediately with water when you get paint stripper, etchant or conversion coating material on your skin.

 (d)
If these materials get in your eyes, immediately flush the eyes with water.

___________________________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  This procedure contains the task to remove the paint from the metal surfaces and Composite Substrates.
 B.  Paint strippers or solvents are used to remove small quantities of paint on metal surfaces. Do not use paint stripper on plastic laminations, fiberglass, aerodynamic smoother, edges of metal bonds or rubber parts. Use only approved solvents for these materials.
