CAUTION: SEALANTS AND SMOOTHER CAN BE DAMAGED DURING PREPAINT CLEANING
_______ OPERATIONS. DAMAGED SEALANT AND SMOOTHER WILL NOT BOND TO THE SURFACE AND MUST BE REMOVED.
(1)
Put covers on all adjacent areas.

Clean the surface.
NOTE: Do not clean anodized surfaces with abrasive disks, fabrics,
____ pads, or paper if you will not paint the surfaces.
(a)
Remove all temporary protective coatings.
(b)
Use a spray gun to remove all the remaining stripper material, loose dust particles and contamination.
(c)
Use water, at a temperature between 135 to 145°F, and at a rate of 10 to 20 gallons per minute.
WARNING: DO NOT GET METHYL ETHYL KETONE (MEK) IN YOUR MOUTH OR
_______ EYES, OR ON YOUR SKIN. DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES FROM MEK. PUT ON A PROTECTIVE SPLASH GOGGLE AND GLOVES WHEN YOU USE MEK. KEEP MEK AWAY FROM SPARKS, FLAME, AND HEAT. MEK IS A POISONOUS AND FLAMMABLE SOLVENT WHICH CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU CLEAN AROUND THE FASTENERS, SEAMS AND
_______ LAP JOINTS. THIS IS TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE FASTENERS, SEAMS AND LAP JOINTS.
(d) Use a rigid bristle brush that is moist with MEK and toluene
(1:1 mixture by volume) to clean around fasteners, seams and lap joints.
NOTE: You can isolate the sealant bead from the skin when you
____ clean with MEK and Toluene. Do not do a test of the sealant bead bond with your fingernail or with a knife. Only do a visual inspection of the interface between the sealant bead and the skin.

(3) Repair all damaged sealant (AMM 51-31-00/201).

Remove the sealant bead where the separation occurs between the body of the sealant bead and the airplane skin.

If the separation is confined to the thin edge of the sealant bead, do these steps:
(a)
Remove the sealant where the separation occurs with MEK or a
1:1 solution of MEK and toulene.
(b)
Carefully rub the surface with abrasive paper, fabric or a pad.

(6) Use silicon carbide paper to make the stainless steel and titanium surfaces rough.
NOTE: The surfaces with aluminum flame-sprayed fiberglass or
____ Alodine 1200 must not be made rough.

(7) Clean the surface with a 1:1 solution of MEK and toulene before you paint the surface.
(a) Clean the surface until you can see no signs of dirt on a cheesecloth.
