VOLCANIC ASH CONDITION - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
______________________________________________ (CONDITIONAL INSPECTION)
________________________
 1.  General_______
 A.  This procedure has a task to inspect the airplane for damage caused by volcanic ash.
 TASK 05-51-57-212-040
 2.  Volcanic Ash Conditional Inspection___________________________________
 A.  General
 (1)
Inspect the airplane if one of these conditions occur:

 (a)
You fly the airplane through a cloud of volcanic ash.

 (b)
Volcanic ash engulfs the airplane while it operates on the ground (towing, taxiing, parking, etc.).

 (c)
The airplane lands or takes off in volcanic ash.

 (2)
There are several indications of an in-flight volcanic ash encounter:

 (a)
Electrostatic discharge across the windshields

 (b)
A bright glow in the engine inlets possibly followed by engine failure

 (c)
Decreased visibility through the windshields and windows.

 (3)
Volcanic ash has these qualities:

 (a)
it is highly abrasive

 (b)
it is generally considered to be non-corrosive over the short term

 (c)
it can remove corrosion resistant finish

 (d)
it is made of small particles less than 5 microns with trace amounts more than 50 microns and resembles talcum powder

 (e)
it clings to exposed lubricated surfaces

 (f)
it can get into many conventional seals, the engine gas path, the air conditioning system, and other open areas.

 (g)
it can damage parts that rotate and slide

 (h)
it will probably not get in sealed bearings such as wheel bearings

 (i)
it can be a hazard to the eyes and respiratory system.

 (4)
Remove the ash and repair the finish as soon as possible.

 (a)  Be careful not to rub the surface when you wash the airplane (AMM 12-40-00/201).
