5.1.8.1 Distress rnessages and distress trafic shall be
handled in accordance with the provisions of 5.3.
5.1.8.2 Urgency rnessages nnd urgency trfSic, including
mcssagcs prcccded by thc inedical transports signal, shall be
handled in accordance with the provisions of 5.3.

be handled in accorclance with Chapter 6.
5.1.8.4 Flight safery messages shall comprise the
following:
1) movement and control messages [see PANS-.ATM
[:Doc 444)l;
2) rnessages onginated by an aircraft operating agency or
by an aircraft. of immediate concern to an aircraft in
flight:
3) meteorological advice of immediate concern to an
aircraft in I-light or about in dcparl (individually
communicated or for broadcast);
4) other messages concerning aircraft in fight or about to
depart.
5.1 .X.5 Meteorological messages shall comprise meteorological
information to or from aircraft, other thw those in
5.1.8.4, 3).
5.1 .8.6 Flight regulari~ lnessnges shall comprise the
following:
L ) message,s regarding the operation or maintenance of
facilities essential for the safety 01- regularily of aircraft
ope.ratinn:
2) messages concerning the servicing 01 aircraft;
3) instruc~ions Lo aircraft operating agency representatives
cunccrning changcs in requirements for passengers and
crew caused by unavoidable deviations from normal
operating schedule,^. Individiral requirements of passengers
or crew shall not be admissible in this type of
message:
4) inessages concerning non-rourinc landings to be made
by the aircral't;
5) messages concerning aircraft parts and materials
urgently required;
6) messages concerning changes in aircraft operating
schedulcs.
5.1.8.6.1 Air traffic services units using direct pilotcontroller
communication channels shall only he required to
handle flight regularity messages provided [his can be
achieved without interference with lhcir primary role and no
other channels are available for he handling 01 such messages.

5.1.8.7 Recommendation.- ~Messnges having the surne

5.1.6.8 Interpilot air-to-air communication shall comprise
messages related lo any matter affecting safety and regularity
of flight. The category and priority of these messages shall bc
determined on the basis of their content in accordance with
5.1.8.
5.1.9 Cancellatiorl of messages
5.1.9.1 Incomplete rransmissions. If a message bas not
been co~npletely transmitted when insliuclions to cancel are
received, the station transmitting the mcssagc shall instruct the
receiving station to disregard the incomplete transmission. This
shall be effected jn radiotelephony by use of an appropriate
phrase.
