CHAPTER 5. AERONAUTICAL MOBILE SERVICE -
VOICE COMMUNICAI'IONS
5.1 General
Note.- For the purposes of these provzsrons, the
cornnti~nication procedures applicable to the aeronautical
mobile service, as appmpriatp, a l ~ oap ply to the aeronautical
mobile sotellite service.
5.1.1 In all communications the highest standard of
discipline shall be observed at all times.
5.1.1.1 ICAO standardized phraseology shall be used in all
situations for which it has been specified. Only when
standardized phraseology cannot serve an intended transmission,
plain languagc shall be used.
Note.- Derailed language prc!ficiency requirements appeor
in the Appertdix to Arinex I.
5.1.1.2 The transmissioll of messages, other than those
specified in 5.1.8, on aerona~rticanl lobile frequencies when the
aeronautical fixed services are able to scrvc the intended
purpose, shall he avoided.
5.1.1.3 Rccommcndation.- In all commrlnicatiorls, thc

5.1.5 Recommendation.- Afier a call has been made to
the aeronautical stution, a period of at leust IO seconds should
elapse before a second call is made. This should elirninote
unnecessan transmissions tvhile the aeronautical station is
getting ready ro reply to rhc initial call.
5.1.6 When an aeronautical station is called simultaneously
by several aircraft stations, the aeronautical station shall decide
the order in which aircraft shall co~nmunicate.
5.1.7 In communications between aircraft stations, Ihe
duration of communication shall be controlled by the aircraft
stahon which is receiving, subject to the intervention of an
aeronautical shtion. If such communications take place on an
ATS frequency, prior permission of the aeronautical station
shall be obtained. Such requests for pcrrnission are not
required f o b~ri ef exchanges.
5.1.8 Catepo~eso f messages
The categories of messages handled by h e aeronautical mobile
service and the order of priority in the establishment of
communications and the ixu~sinissiono f messages shall be in
accordance with the following table.

5.1.2 Where it is necessary for an aircraft station to send
signals for testing or adjust~ncnt which are liable to interfere
with the working of a ~ieighbouring aeronautical station, the
coilsent of the station shall be obtained before such signals are
sent. Such transmissions shall be kept to a minimum.
5.1,3 When it is necessary for a station jn the aeronautical
mobile service to make test signals, either for the adjustment
of a transmitter before making a call or for the adjustment of
a receiver, such signals shall not continue for more than 10
seconds and shall be composed of spoken numerals (OhT,
TWO, THREE, etc.) in radiotelephony. followed by the radio
call s i g of the station transmitting the test signals. Such
transmissions shall be kept to a minimnuin.
