need a check ride in a helicopter that
requires a co-pilot (Canada). In those
covered by JARs, you have to do 500
hours in a multi-crew environment,
so an ATPL is unobtainable outside
a company environment.
JAR
The exams take several days, and are
only done at certain times of the year
(roughly every two months - the
results are timed so that you just fail
to qualify for resits at the next
round). Academically, the JAR CPL
is way above the FAA and Canadian
(and possibly Australian) ATPL.
JARs are changing even as they are
being implemented, but, generally
speaking, there are two types of
study course available, integrated or
modular. You need a minimum
knowledge of maths, physics and
English, which the school has to
ensure you have, and they have to
certify that you have done the
ground school. You cannot mix
training from different JAR states,
but you can train in them as long as
6 The Helicopter Pilot’s Handbook
the State issuing your licence has
approved the school.
Any variations from requirements
listed below (you may have non-
ICAO licences) are dealt with by the
head of the training organisation, but
such decisions are always subject to
CAA approval.
Integrated Courses
Full time ground and flight training
run by an approved organisation.
The CPL(H) integrated course does
not include the IR or aerial work
training. The ATPL(H) course
includes multi-crew and the IR.
For the CPL integrated course, you
need 135 hours of flying training,
plus 550 hours of ground school,
consisting of 100 hours dual with 10
cross country, 35 PIC with 10 crosscountry,
with a flight over 100nm,
stopping at 2 different aerodromes.
Also, 5 hours night (3 dual, with 1
cross-country), with 5 solo takeoffs
and landings, and 10 on instruments,
5 of which can be done in a
simulator. A PPL holder may be
credited with up to 50% of any
hours flown before the course (up to
40, or 50 if you have a night rating).
For the ATPL integrated course,
195 hours flight training and 750
hours on the ground, consisting of
95 hours dual, 100 PIC with 50
cross-country, with a flight over
300nm, stopping at two different
aerodromes. Also, 5 hours night (3
dual, with 1 cross-country), with 5
solo takeoffs and landings, and 65
on instruments, 35 being instruction,
with up to 10 on the ground or 20 in
a simulator. 15 of the rest must be as
SPIC and the other 15 as multi-crew.
PPL holders may be credited with up
to 50% of any hours flown before
the course (up to 40, or 45 if you
have a night rating).
Modular Courses
For people with a PPL(H), who wish
to stagger their training over a longer
period (you take certain modules as
and when you are ready). You
require either:
·  150 hours on helicopters,
including 50 PIC.
·  135 hours on helicopters if you
have a PPL(A), with 30 as PIC.
·  105 hours on helicopters if you
have a CPL(A).
It consists of 30 hours dual, with 10
hours instruments (5 on the ground)
if you don't have an IR. It must
include 10 hours PIC cross-country,
with a flight over 100nm, stopping at
two different aerodromes. Also, 5
hours night (3 dual, with 1 crosscountry),
with 5 solo takeoffs and
landings, and 10 on instruments, 5 of
which can be done in a simulator.
ATPL
You need 1000 hours, with 350
multi-pilot, 250 PIC (can include 150
PIC U/S), 200 cross country (100
PIC or PIC U/S) 70 on instruments
(30 ground) and 100 at night (PIC or
PIC U/S). You can do 100 hours in
a simulator and 750 of the total in
aeroplanes. You must be at least 21.
Canada
The CPL needs at least 100 hours in
helicopters, but with a PPL(H),
Canadian or otherwise, you get away
with 60.
You must also do at least 40 hours
ground school, but if you don’t
Qualifications 7
already hold a PPL(H), you must do
another 40, for a total of 80 (this is
expected to increase at some stage).
You can take the exams any time at
any Transport Canada office.
If you don’t manage the night hours,
you can still get a licence, but for day
only, if you meet the dual and solo
times. The restriction will be
removed once you get the time in.
For the ATPL, you must have at
least 1000 hours, 600 hours in
helicopters (instrument ground time
does not count), pass two more
written exams and take a check ride
