A. The digital flight recorder system records selected flight parameters including FAA mandatory parameters. Recording is done on magnetic tape and the recording contains data for the last 25 hours of airplane operation.
B. The system has a digital flight data acquisition management unit (DFDAMU) and a digital flight data recorder (DFDR). It also has a control display unit (CDU), a flight recorder control panel (FRCP), an accelerometer, relays and sensors.
C. The DFDAMU has two sub-circuit assemblies, the data acquisition unit (DAU) assembly and the data management unit (DMU) assembly. The DMU assembly interfaces with the airplane condition monitoring system (ACMS) (Ref 31-35-00).
D. The DAU sub-circuit assembly receives mandatory parameters and sends them to the DFDR for recording and to the DMU sub-circuit assembly where they are reformatted for ACMS.
E. The CDU provides the means for inserting documentary data into the DFDAMU and retrieving data from the DFDAMU.
F. The system is turned on automatically when the airplane is in flight, or on the ground when an engine is running. The system may also be turned on manually or tested by means of a toggle switch on the flight recorder control panel.
G. The flight data recorder system is monitored continuously by BITE during operation. System failures are displayed on the flight recorder control panel, the DFDAMU, the DFDR, and the EICAS.
2. Component Details (Fig. 1)_________________
A. Flight Recorder Control Panel

The flight recorder control panel (FRCP) provides system manual power control and indicates system status. The control panel consists of a function (ON-NORM-TEST) switch, a relay and OFF annunciator.

The function switch is normally set to the NORM position. In this position, power to the system is automatically controlled through the system power relays. The ON position is used manually to turn on the DFDAMU and the DFDR. The TEST position is spring-loaded and is used to turn on power to the DFDAMU and the DFDR for testing purposes.
(3)
The OFF light on the FRCP comes on when the DFDR and/or the DFDAMU fails, the system is not turned on, or in the absence of electrical power.
