65.10 Powerplant Fire Protection
FAR27.1183:[Lines, .ttings,andcomponents.]
(a) Except asprovidedinparagraph(b) of thissection,eachline, .tting,and othercom-ponent carrying .ammable .uid in any area subject to engine .re conditions must be .reresistant,exceptthat .ammable .uid tanksand supportswhich arepartof and attached to the engine must be .reproof or be enclosed by a .reproof shield unless damage by .re to any non-.reproof part will not cause leakage or spillage of .ammable .uid. Components must be shielded or located so as to safeguard against the ignition of leaking .ammable .uid. An integral oil sump of less than [25-quart]capacity on a reciprocating engine need not be .reproof nor be enclosed by a .reproof shield.

(b)
Paragraph(a) does not apply to–

(1)
[Lines, .ttings, andcomponents which are already approved as part of a type certi.cated engine; and]

(2)
Vent and drain lines, and their .ttings, whose failure will not result in, or add to, a .re hazard.

 

(c)
Each .ammable .uid drain and vent must discharge clear of the induction system

FAR 27.1185 : Flammable .uids
(a)
Each fuel tank must be isolated from the engines by a .rewall or shroud.

(b)
Each tank or reservoir, other than a fuel tank, that is part of a system containing .ammable .uidsorgasesmustbeisolatedfromtheengineby a .rewall orshroud, unless thedesign of the system, the materials usedin the tank andits supports, the shuto. means, and the connections, lines and controls provide a degree of safety equal to that which would exist if the tank or reservoir were isolated from the engines.

(c)
There must be at least one-half inch of clear airspace between each tank and each .rewall or shroud isolating that tank, unless equivalent means are used to prevent heat transfer from each engine compartment to the .ammable .uid.

(d)
[Absorbent materials close to .ammable .uid system components that might leak must be covered or treated to prevent the absorption of hazardous quantities of .uids.]

FAR27.1187 :Ventilation[anddrainage.]
[ Each compartment containing any part of the powerplant installation must have provisionforventilationanddrainageof .ammable .uids.Thedrainagemeansmustbe–
(a)
E.ective under conditions expected to prevail when drainage is needed, and

(b)
Arranged so that no discharged .uid will cause an additional .re hazard.] Amdt. 27-37, E.. 10/18/99

FAR 27.1189 : Shuto. means

(a)
There must be means to shut o. each line carrying .ammable .uids into the engine compartment, except–

(1)
Lines, .ttings, and components forming an integral part of an engine;

(2)
For oil systems for which all components of the system, including oil tanks, are .reproof orlocatedinareasnotsubjecttoengine .reconditions; and

(3)
For reciprocating engine installations only, engine oil system lines in installa-tions using engines of less that 500 cu. in. displacement.

 

(b)
Theremustbe meanstoguard againstinadvertentoperationof each shuto., and to make it possible for the crew to reopen it in .ight after it has been closed.

(c)
[Eachshuto.valveanditscontrol mustbedesigned,located, andprotected tofunc-

FAR27.1191 :[Firewalls.]
(a)
[Eachengine, including the combustor, turbine, and tailpipe sections of turbine en-gines must be isolated by a .rewall, shroud, or equivalent means, from personnel compartments, structures, controls, rotor mechanisms, and other parts that are–

(1)
Essential to a controlled landing : and
