FAR 25.1183 : Flammable .uid-carrying components.
(a)
Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, each line, .tting, and other component carrying .ammable .uid in any area subject to engine .re conditions, and each component which conveys or contains .ammable .uid in a designated .re zone must be .re resistant, except that .ammable .uid tanks and supports in a designated .re zone must be .reproof or be enclosed by a .reproof shield unless damage by .re to any non-.reproof part will not cause leakage or spillage of .ammable .uid. Components must be shielded or located to safeguard against the ignition of leaking .ammable .uid. An integral oil sump of less than 25-quart capacity on a reciprocating engine need not be .reproof nor be enclosed by a .reproof shield.

(b)
Paragraph(a) of this sectiondoes not apply to–

(1)
Lines, .ttings, and components which are already approved as part of a type certi.cated engine; and

(2)
Vent and drain lines, and their .ttings, whose failure will not result in, or add to, a .re hazard.

 

(c)
[Allcomponents, including ducts, within a designated .re zone must be .reproof if, when exposed to or damaged by .re, they could–

(1)
Result in .re spreading to other regions of the airplane; or

(2)
Cause unintentional operation of, or inability to operate, essential services or equipment.]

FAR 25.1185 : Flammable .uids.
(a)
Exceptfortheintegral oil sumps speci.edin[Sec.25.1183(a),] notank or reservoir that is a part of a system containing .ammable .uids or gases may be in a desi-gnated .re zone unless the .uid contained, the design of the system, the materials usedin the tank, the shut-o. means, and all connections,lines, and controlprovide a degree of safety equal to that which would exist if the tank or reservoir were outside such a zone.

(b)
Theremustbe atleast one-halfinch of clearairspacebetweeneach tank orreservoir and each .rewall or shroud isolating a designated .re zone.

(c)
Absorbent materials close to .ammable .uid system components that might leak must be covered or treated to prevent the absorption of hazardous quantities of .uids.

FAR 25.1187 : Drainage and ventilation of .re zones.
(a)
There must be complete drainage of each part of each designated .re zone to mini-mize the hazards resultingfromfailure or malfunctioning of any component contai-ning .ammable .uids. The drainage means must be–

(1)
E.ective under conditions expected to prevail when drainage is needed; and

(2)
Arranged so that no discharged .uid will cause an additional .re hazard.

 

(b)
Each designated .re zone must be ventilated to prevent the accumulation of .am-mable vapors.

(c)
No ventilation opening may be where it would allow the entry of .ammable .uids, vapors, or .ame from other zones.

(d)
Each ventilation means must be arranged so that no discharged vapors will cause an additional .re hazard.

(e)
Unless the extinguishing agent capacity and rate ofdischarge arebased on maximum air .ow through a zone, there must be means to allow the crew to shut o. sources offorced ventilationtoany .rezoneexcepttheenginepowersectionof thenacelle and the combustion heater ventilating air ducts.

FAR 25.1189 : Shuto. means.

(a)
Each engine[installation] and each .rezonespeci.edinSec.25.1181(a)(4) and(5) must have a means to shut o. or otherwise prevent hazardous quantities of fuel, oil, deicer, and other .ammable .uids, from .owing into, within, or through any designated .re zone, except that shuto. means are not required for–
