1.2. IATA identification code for Unit Load Devices (ULDs)
There is a large number of ULDs in operations today. Taking into account all the characteristics
corresponding to a particular ULD has therefore developed an identification Code.
This Code contains essential data to describe each ULD and for further technical information the
reference is the IATA ULD Technical Manual.
The purpose of the following paragraph is to explain quickly the method of ULD marking and
numbering.
. IATA Identification Code
The Identification Code gives each unit an individual identification and allows the easy exchange of the information contained in the marking of units.
The IATA Identification Code consists in nine characters composed of the following elements:
Position Type description
1 ULD Category 2 Base Dimensions 3 Contour and Compatibility 4,5,6 and 7 Serial number 8 and 9 Owner/Registrant
Only the three first letters are necessary to identify the ULD.
