PASSENGER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
__________________________________________________________
1. General_______
A. The passenger entertainment system supplies entertainment audio to the passenger seats.
B. The system has these components:
(1)
Entertainment control switch
(2)
Entertainment tape reproducer
(3)
Main multiplexer
(4)
Seat electronics boxes (SEB)
(5)
Passenger control units (PCU).
C. The system gets power from the 115v ac right utility bus through circuit breakers on the right miscellaneous electrical equipment panel, P37. The power relays get power from the 28v dc battery bus through a circuit breaker on the overhead circuit breaker panel, P11.
2. Component Details_________________(Fig. 1)
A. Entertainment Control Switch
(1)
The entertainment control switch (also refered to as the PES switch) is on the forward attendant panel, P21. It has three positions (OFF, ON, TEST). When set to ON, the PES switch supplies a ground to energize the mux power relay. This relay supplies ground to energize the entertainment tape reproducer and the main multiplexer. The main multiplexer then supplies 35v ac power for the SEBs, which in turn supply 5.6v dc for the PCUs. In this way, the PES switch energizes the whole system.
(2)
In the TEST position, the main multiplexer does a built-in test. The test does a check of the main multiplexer and of all the units and cables on the way out to the passenger control units. The self-test does not check any units ahead of the main multiplexer, such as the entertainment tape reproducer.
B. Entertainment Tape Reproducer
(1)
The entertainment tape reproducer is installed on shelf 4 of the main equipment center rack E4 (E4-4).
(2)
The tape reproducer supplies 12 audio channels to the main multiplexer. Four of these audio channels are also supplied to the PA amplifier for boarding music (Ref 23-31-00).
(3)
The tape reproducer contains six cassettes, each played back by its own tape transport assembly. Each tape transport assembly consists of a capstan motor, reel motor, and a 4-channel head. The cassettes are labeled 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B. Each A cassette contains the first half of a program and the B cassette contains the second half. The cassettes must be loaded in the correct position, with the correct side facing out for proper operation.
(4)
The cassettes are loaded into the tape reproducer via access doors on each side of the unit. There are no external controls on the tape reproducer.
