E. Messages
(1)
Display messages
(a) General There are various messages displayed on the MCDU for pilot information. All messages are displayed in the scratchpad line of the MCDU. When a message is also displayed on the EFIS, it is specified.
(2)
Display color of messages The display color of a message may be white or amber. As a general rule, messages which concern navigation, request for data entry or which are also displayed on the EFIS, are amber as they are considered as important. Messages which are only displayed as a result to a pilot action on the MCDU are white. The list of messages (Para. E.(6)) gives the display color for each message (W = white, A = amber). For clarification, an important message is amber ; an unimportant message is white.
(3)
Minimization of message display during Takeoff, Go Around and
Approach close to the ground
Considering COND A = | A/C in Takeoff, Go Around or Approach | and | A/C height below 800 ft (TBC)
The general idea is to minimize message display on MCDU when COND A
is true, only two kinds of messages may be displayed.
These are:
-important messages (mainly concerning navigation) which may appear "by themselves" (Type II).
-messages which are only displayed as an immediate result to a pilot
action on MCDU (Type I). Banned messages are displayed (if still applicable) when COND A becomes false. The list of messages (Para. E.(6)) specifies which category each message belongs to: "N" means banned. "/" means not applicable by definition (the normal conditions of display of the message being not compatible with COND A). "y" means allowed.
(4) Message type (Ref. Fig. 017)
(a)
Type I messages Type I messages are those displayed as the direct result of pilot action. There is no message queue for Type I messages. Consequently, a Type I message exists only if it is presently displayed in the scratchpad.
(b)
Type II messages Type II messages are those that are displayed automatically to inform the pilot of a given situation or to prompt a pilot action. Type II messages are stored in a last-in/first-out message queue. A maximum of five messages may be stored and if a sixth message is received, the one at bottom of the queue is lost. Only one occurrence of a given message is generated, it is placed on the top of the queue and any previous occurrence is deleted. The message at the top of the queue is displayed in the scratchpad only if there are no Type I messages or data to be displayed. This results in the following operation:
