MENU
FODM – Introduction to XML 1/44
FODM – Introduction to XML 2/44
Introduction to XML
Introduction to XML:
Mark-up Languages
 What is XML?
 XML Syntax
 XML Elements vs. Attributes
 XML DTD/Schema
FODM – Introduction to XML 3/44
Introduction to XML
(concepts)
Warning:
This presentation is a complement of the XML presentation
exposed during the “structured documentation overview”.
This part will teach you the XML concepts.
The example are still useful in the Airbus way of using XML, but
Airbus already did some choices in XML usage that author will not
be able to change.
e.g. XML may be very rich, and in theory the elements can be
created by any users.
But Airbus defined the DTD which cannot be changed. Then the
user will not have the liberty to create new elements or he won’t be
able to transform an attribute in an element.
FODM – Introduction to XML 4/44
XML is free and extensible
XML tags are not pre-defined
XML allows the author to define his own tags and his own document
structure
Airbus has developed the tags and structure necessary for the
manuals: FCOM, MMEL, CCOM…
E.g.
<effect len="4" type="MSN">
<aircraft-ranges>
<effact> <all />
</effact>
</aircraft-ranges>
<effect>
Etc.
What is XML?
FODM – Introduction to XML 5/44
When can XML be used?
Platform
independent !
Data can be exchanged between incompatible systems
 In the real world, computer systems and databases contain
data in incompatible formats
 One of the most time-consuming challenges for developers
has been to exchange data between such systems over the
Internet
 Converting the data to XML can greatly reduce this
complexity and create data that can be read by many different
types of applications
XML is:
 Cross-platform
 Software and hardware independent
 For information exchange
FODM – Introduction to XML 6/44
When can XML be used?
 Other clients and applications can access your XML files as data sources, like they
are accessing databases
 Data can be made available to all kinds of "reading machines" (applications)
XML data is stored in plain text format, so it is:
 Easier to create data for different applications to understand
 Easier to expand or upgrade a system to new operating systems, servers,
applications, and new browsers
XML can also be used to store data in files or in databases
 Applications can be written to store and retrieve information from the store
 Generic applications can be used to display the data
