Wednesday afternoon, around 1PM,
we started noticing that the heat had
decreased, with multiple sighs of relief.
Thursday morning, it even got chilly and
the air-conditioning was blowing, and
my experience told me that I couldn’t do
much about it.
But just on a whim, I tried to work the
temperature control box on the side wall,
which had previously been unresponsive,
and lo and behold it works, and the airconditioning
went off!
Again, on behalf of two instructors and
20+ students, “Thank you” to all who
helped.”
When the company turned up the heat,
SPEEA was able to help. (Just kidding!)
The real message here is that sometimes it is
easier for the union to get problems resolved
inside the company instead of waiting for
the everyday processes to work. [BR]

SPEEA lends a helping…paint brush?
Helping others is what SPEEA is all about – especially when that helping hand can
be extended to someone who affects a community by assisting some of its neediest
members.
On Dec. 28, SPEEA Midwest members and staff volunteered their time and effort to
paint the inside of a medical clinic overseen by Rosa Molina, executive director of the
Medical Services Bureau in Wichita. According to Midwest Council Rep Earl Carter,
Molina and her staff have provided needed medications to laid-off SPEEA members and
others in the Wichita community facing the most dire of financial circumstances. In one
instance, a laid off SPEEA member’s life was saved through this selfless assistance.
Molina’s staff is primarily able to provide this aid through connections with medical
discount clearinghouses, and through their ability to obtain grants from pharmaceutical
companies. Others who helped paint the clinic included International Association
of Machinists (IAM) member Ernie Gonzales and AFL-CIO labor liaison Mario
Cervantes. Donated paint and painting supplies were provided by Midwest Council Rep
Dan Mengoni.
