on contract
SPEEA Irving members were tentatively
set to vote on a contract proposal at a
special meeting, Friday, Jan. 28. This
followed months of subcommittee work
and days of main-table talks between
SPEEA’s Negotiation Team and company

Wichita waits for sale announcement

WICHITA, KS – While the sale
of the Wichita Commercial
Airplane Division is still pending
a press time, mumbling within The
Boeing Company is that the announcement
could come any day.
Boeing officials in Wichita recently indicated
privately that the company narrowed
the list of potential buyers and
may be in final talks with finalists. No
clear indication of which companies are
finalists was provided.
The sale will directly affect approximately
2,500 skilled engineers, technical and
professional aerospace workers represented
by SPEEA-IFPTE at the plant here.
Recognition of the union is protected
by federal law. SPEEA has been preparing
for months to negotiate the effects
of the sale on employees with Boeing.

Federal laws apply to campaigning
Federal law requires labor organizations to
comply with all reasonable requests of any
candidate to distribute campaign literature, at
the candidate’s expense, to members in good
standing of the labor organization. The labor
organization must refrain from discrimination
in favor of or against any candidate with
respect to distribution of campaign literature

At their regular meeting, the Executive
Board:
• Heard an update on Sound Transit.
There was a hearing on Jan. 14, with
Charles Bofferding, SPEEA executive
director, and E-Board Treasurer
Tom McCarty planning to attend.
• The Board and Council officers
agreed to sign the Letter of
Understanding from Boeing to move
the retention exercise.
• Heard a report from Stan Sorscher
on divestitures and pensions.
• Heard an update on the Fair Labor
Standards Act (FLSA). Bofferding
said the exempt staff are continuing
to closely watch jurisdiction issues
– looking for techs moving in and
out of the unit.
• Unanimously decided not to schedule
facilities use way into the future.
• Authorized additional lines for phone
conference bridges up to $2,750.
• Discussed mass mailings for committees,
and believed this should be left
up to the Council Reps.
• Approved $5,000 for Enterprise
Seattle (formerly Seattle King County
Economic Development Council
(EDC) Partnership).
• Approved changes to the Executive
Board Policy sections 2.7, 3.2D, 3.4,
4.4, 4.7.1.3E, 4.7.1.3H, 4.8.1.4,
4.10, 5.4, 6.1B and 6.1C, 7.2.
The board’s next board meeting was Jan.
27. Upcoming: Feb. 17. All SPEEA-represented
