Hartig randomly drew winners of this
month’s recruitment contest. The winners
are: Lloyd Bonham (WTPU),
George Anthony (WTPU), Khanga
Dapp (WEU), Tom Lancaster
(WTPU) and Joyce Thomas (Irving).
Each winner received a $50 check
from SPEEA.
Compensation
class-action lawsuit
Claim forms have been sent in the
Beck v. Boeing compensation
disparity lawsuit. If you believe
you are eligible for a form and have
not received one, please call the claims
administrator, Settlement Services, at:
1-866-854-5146.
To be considered for a monetary payment,
eligible women must complete
and return the claims form by the deadline.
Claim forms must be postmarked
by May 3, 2005.

SPEEA Council highlights, Jan. 20, 2005
SPEEA Council meeting was chaired
from Everett, Wash., with Tukwila
and Wichita teleconferenced into the
meeting.
SPEEA Council Chair Jimmie Mathis
introduced new Tukwila SPEEA staff
member Ella Farrell.
Old Business
• Motion MO4-078 – Expansion Effort
vote results: For: 83; Against 3.
(Abstentions 0). This motion passed.
New Business
• The SPEEA Council PASSED a
motion to approve the 2005-2006
SPEEA Council budget of $191,597.
• M05-002 Support of Social Security – It
was moved that THE SPEEA COUNCIL
OPPOSES ANY DIVERSION OF
SOCIAL SECURITY PAYROLL TAXES
TO PRIVATE INVESTMENTS, AND
SUPPORTS THE PRESERVATION
OF THE FULL FAMILY INSURANCE
PROTECTIONS OF THE SOCIAL
SECURITY ACT, AS CURRENTLY
AMENDED, AND REQUESTS
THE EXECUTIVE BOARD TO
CONTACT ALL MEMBERS OF
CONGRESS WHO REPRESENT
SPEEA-REPRESENTED EMPLOYEES
AND INFORM THEM OF OUR
POSITION ON THIS ISSUE. This
motion FAILED.
• M05-003 Constitutional Referendum
to revise Section 2 – It was moved
that THE SPEEA COUNCIL SHALL
SUBMIT A REFERENDUM TO
THE SPEEA MEMBERSHIP TO
REVISE SECTION 2 OF THE
SPEEA CONSTITUTION. Motion
was made to refer Motion 05-003 back
to committee, which PASSED.
• M05-004 Constitutional Referendum
to revise Section 3 – It is moved that
THE SPEEA COUNCIL SHALL
SUBMIT A REFERENDUM TO
THE SPEEA MEMBERSHIP TO
REVISE SUBSECTION 3.1.3 OF
THE SPEEA CONSTITUTION TO
READ AS FOLLOWS. Motion was
made to refer Motion 05-004 back to
committee, which PASSED.
• Motion to refer Motions 05-005 –
011 relating to the Constitution back
to the Governing Documents committee
PASSED by the SPEEA Council.
Good of the Union
Leadership Development & Training
(LD&T) – Please submit your ideas for
this year’s theme to Council Rep Mark
Schuetz, LD&T chair. There will also be
classes on Roles & Responsibilities for people
interested in running for Council Rep
in the upcoming election.
Membership Activities Committee (MAC)
– Seeking volunteers to judge upcoming science
fair in Tacoma, Wash. (see news brief
on page 6) and also in need of donated
items/services for the silent auction at this
year’s NW Region Recognition Banquet.
Please contact Council Rep Bill Barrett,
MAC Chair, if you are interested. Reminder
that there will be whitewater rafting, the
golf tournament, and the cystic fibrosis
“Ride for the Cure” again this year.
The next Northwest Council Meeting will
be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Bellevue
on Feb. 10. It is “Bring a Guest Night.”
The Executive Board has approved money
for 10 people to attend the “Festival of
Worker’s Culture,” from Feb. 18-20 at the
Seattle Labor Temple. (See page 4 of the
newsletter for details).
On Feb. 22, at 11 a.m. at the Pantages
Theater in Tacoma, Willie Adams and the
International Longshore and Warehouse
Union present: “A Call to Conscience,
A Celebration of Black History, Women
and Labor.” Tickets are available at the
Broadway Center Ticket Office or www.
