C. SlickSTART Booster System
The SlickSTART booster system is the standard system in the DA 40. It is active only during the engine start-up process.
The ignition-switch-cables connect to the SlickSTART booster. Nuts and bolts attach the booster to a bracket on the left side of the engine mount. Electrical cables from the booster connect to the left magneto and connect to the right magneto. The starter supplies electrical power to the booster. A 5 amp in-line fuse protects the booster.
D. Limited Authority Spark Advance Regulator (LASAR)
The LASAR system is optional equipment.
The ignition-switch-cables connect to the LASAR control unit. Nuts and bolts attach the control unit to a bracket on the left side of the engine mount. Electrical cables from the control unit connect to the left magneto and connect to the right magneto. The Main Bus 1 supplies electrical power to the control unit. A 10 amp circuit-breaker protects the circuit.
The LASAR system has these modes of operation:
) Automatic Mode. The automatic mode is the usual operating mode when the system is operating correctly and the engine is running. The control unit energizes relays in the left magneto and in the right magneto. The relays operate switches in each magneto which electrically isolate the contact-breaker points from the low tension coils of the magneto. The LASAR control unit controls the ignition timing and the high-tension voltage to the spark-plugs.
) Back-Up Mode. In back-up mode the electrical power to operate the relays in the magnetos is removed. The switches close and the contact-breakers are re-connected in circuit with the magneto low-tension coils. The magnetos now operate in the same way as standard magnetos.
The LASAR system goes into back-up mode when:
(1) Power is supplied to the control unit and the engine is not running.
(2) The engine is running and there is no power to the control unit.
(3) The engine is running and the ignition switch is not set to BOTH.
(4) The system malfunctions.

E. Ignition Status Light (IGN or IGNITION)
The white ignition status light (IGN or IGNITION) is located on the annunciator panel which is located on the instrument panel, at the top. It is only used when the LASAR ignition system is installed. The ignition status light comes on when the LASAR system is in the back-up mode (failure mode).
F. Magnetos
(1) SlickSTART Magneto Booster System Installed
The 2 Slick magnetos attach to the rear accessory housing and are driven directly by the engine. The contact breakers control the ignition timing. The ignition timing is fixed to 25° BTDC.
During the engine start-up process, the SlickSTART booster delivers energy to the retard breaker magneto.
(2) LASAR System Installed
The 2 Slick magnetos attach to the rear accessory housing and are driven directly by the engine. The left magneto has a position/speed sensor which gives a reference signal to the LASAR control unit. The right magneto does not have a sensor.
Each magneto has an electrical relay which is controlled by the LASAR control unit. In the automatic mode of operation the control unit sets the relay to electrically isolate the low tension circuit of the magneto. The engine ignition timing is then controlled by the LASAR control unit. If the LASAR system is in back-up mode, the electrical relays reconnect the contact-breakers into the low-tension circuit of the magneto. The contact breakers control the ignition timing. In back-up mode of operation the ignition timing is fixed to 25° BTDC. An electrical cable connects each magneto to the LASAR control unit.
G. High-Tension Cables (Ignition Harness)
Each magneto supplies high-tension pulses to one spark-plug in each cylinder. High tension cables connect the magneto to the spark-plugs. Each cable has a core which transmits the high tension electricity. The core has thick layer of insulation and the insulation is covered with a braided metal screen. The braided metal screen connects to the cable end-fittings and prevents radio interference.
