Editor-in-Chief Professor Shuzhi Sam Ge, from the National
University of Singapore, said, “While social robots are still in their
infancy, and their integration into our society remains to be
investigated, we are confident that the International Journal of
Social Robotics will provide a unified platform for researchers from
diverse disciplines to work together and contribute to the scientific
community.”

News from HBM
HBM has developed its
INDUSTRYmonitor software for efficient
utilisation of its FASTpress press-fit controller
and EASYswitch switch checker, making
production systems easier to operate and
monitor. All displays and functions in the
software can be
varied to meet the
requirements of
different production
processes, countries
and individual
operators to benefit companies operating
in a number of different areas and
locations.
HBM has improved the operational
range of its T40 torque flange with two
new nominal (rated) torques of 500 N·m
and 3 kN·m. Most torque measurement
applications in test benches can now be
easily covered when combined with the
two existing flanges of nominal (rated)
torques of 1 kN·m and 2 kN·m. The torque
flange is designed with a short overall
length to allow
simplified integration
into a test bench. In
addition, the flanges
are relatively
insensitive to parasitic
loads allowing
machine elements to
be directly mounted
without needing
additional universaljoint
shafts or couplings. Typical
applications for the torque flange are in the
automotive industry on motor, transmission
or chassis test benches and the T40 can
also be used for testing electric motors,
pumps and generators.
HBM has launched the FastPress suite
series of force and torque measurement
chains comprising sensors, press-fit
electronics and
software that
have been
matched for
optimum
performance.
HBM says that
the chains will
enable design engineers and system
planners to include efficient and perfectly
matched measurement technology in
production systems.
HBM’s EASYswitch
process controller with
TEDS now allows the
testing of up to five
switch elements in one
cycle. The range of
different sensors has been
increased for improved
monitoring of switching systems for power
distribution in automotive or high-quality
consumer goods.
HBM has extended the range of its
family of popular PW12C load cells with a
750kg capacity unit for use in larger
platform scales of up to 800mm x 800mm
and 600 kg capacity. Rated at IP67, the
latest industrial standard unit features
LIMESS – DIC Systems available from the STFC RAL Instrument Loan Pool
LIMESS, together with distribution partner
MD3D Ltd, has enjoyed growing success
over the past year in providing its DIC and
NDT systems to a number of high profile
UK customers. LIMESS/Germany is
development partner of Correlated
Solutions/USA and manufactures the DIC
systems for the European market.
The Science and Technology Facilities
Council, based at the Rutherford labs in
Oxfordshire, have chosen Vic3D as its
preferred image correlation system for their
instrument loan pool. Both high-speed and
quasi-static DIC systems are available to
qualifying academic institutions. Please
contact Adrian Walker at the STFC
(a.t.walker@rl.ac.uk) for further details and
application forms. The systems have
already been used by clients at the
Universities of Southampton, Bristol and
Bath.
The University of Bath (Mechanical
Engineering Dept.) have also invested
heavily in their own Limess DIC,
shearography and real time strain sensor
systems. Applications at Bath are broad and
include high-speed studies on membrane
materials, and NDT of composites.
Other new customers include Bentley
Motors, who are using Vic3D to
characterise advanced materials for future
technology. This work is currently
underway at the University of Nottingham.
And the University of Sheffield will use
Vic3D to carry out material testing studies
in conjunction with Airbus at Filton. Airbus
are already users of multiple Vic3D systems
for crucial aerospace component and
structure testing. The work at Sheffield will
include microscopic scale investigation of
