B. Replace the Fuel Filter Element
Detail Steps/Work Items Key Items/References
(1) Release the bowl from the filter assembly:
S Unscrew from top part of filter assembly.
(2) Remove the old filter element. Look for unwanted material and water
in the filter bowl and on the element.
If you find unwanted material, examine
the airplane fuel system to find the
source.
(3) Install a new filter element (TAE part no. 02-
7310-0474001).
Use a new seal.
(4) Attach the filter bowl to the filter body:
S Screw onto top part of filter assembly.

C. Install the Engine Fuel Filter

WARNING: YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THE ENGINE IS SAFE BEFORE YOU
DO WORK ON THE ENGINE. IF THE PROPELLER TURNS IT CAN
CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS.
(1) Make sure that the engine is safe:
S Set the ELECTRIC MASTER key switch to
OFF.
S Set the ENGINE MASTER switch to OFF.
S Set the power lever to IDLE.
(2) Put the fuel filter in position in the airplane.
% (3) Tighten the 2 worm-drive clamps that attach the
filter to the mounting bracket.
% (4) Connect the 2 fuel hoses at the fuel filter.
% Tighten the hoses. Torque: 17 - 22 Nm (12.5 - 16.2 ft.lb).
% (5) Bleed the fuel distribution system. Refer to Section 28-21.
% (6) Secure the fuel hoses with new lock wire.
% (7) Do an engine run-up. Refer to Section 71-01.
Look for fuel leaks in the area of the
fuel filter.
Note: Starting may take longer than usual as the engine fuel system bleeds fully.
% (8) Install the engine cowlings. Refer to Section 71-11.

CHAPTER 74
IGNITION
1. General
This Chapter tells you about the ignition system for the engine. It gives you the general data about the
ignition system. It gives you the trouble-shooting data for the ignition system and it tells you how to
remove/install the ignition switch.
For more data on the components of the ignition system refer to the Lycoming Maintenance Manual,
the LASAR Operating Manual and the equipment manufacturers' manuals.
Note: Equipment which is certified for installation in the DA 40 is listed in Section 6.5 of
the Airplane Flight Manual. Such equipment may be installed in accordance with
the Airplane Maintenance Manual.
Any equipment which is not listed in Section 6.5 of the Airplane Flight Manual is
called "Additional Equipment". The installation of Additional Equipment is a
modification which must be handled in accordance with national regulations or a
Service Bulletin.
2. Description
The DA 40 has dual ignition. The SlickSTART magneto booster system is standard equipment, the
limited-authority-spark-advance-regulator (LASAR) system is optional. Two Slick magnetos supply the
high voltage electrical impulses to the spark plugs. An ignition switch in the cockpit controls the
magnetos and screened cables connect the magnetos to the spark-plugs. Two spark-plugs in each
